Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 KellanBanner

Kellan glanced from Nol to Arvandor as the General spoke. Obviously there was something akin between the two she was not privy to and while she found it intriguing, she wasn’t about to intrude and ask what it may be. Of course the look on the Gold’s face was something of an indication when she caught a glimpse of the smirk he sported for just a few moments.

The rigorous training he mentioned didn’t bother Kellan. She knew she would have to go above and beyond what any of the others were going to endure. It was the only way for her to truly earn the right to bear the Dragonlance gifted to her from Paladine himself. And she welcomed it eagerly. Hell, if it were up to her, she’d saddle up right now and start but she knew she needed to rest well overnight so she was ready for her training in the morning.

When he clasped his hands behind his back and mentioned business was concluded, Kellan blinked at what he said next. What sort of personal inquiry would an aged Gold Dragon have of her? Whatever it was, it was rather sensitive, or so Kellan got the impression it was. Nodding, she gestured into her quarters then led the way.

”Of course. Right this way, Sir. And please, make yourself at ease.”

Kellan poured drinks for all of them then walked back over to hand Arvandor his. She once more leveled her gaze to his golden one as she took a small sip from her goblet. Lowering the stemmed crystal, she asked him directly.

”What would you like to discuss with me on a more personal level?”

As the sun of a new day caressed Heartlund Keep and it’s crowded occupants with its golden warmth, The Knights were already up and moving about with the daily chores and duties they were all charged with. A threat may be looming on the horizon of each day but that didn’t mean things could be left unattended to. Life still went on as normal as it could for most and that meant certain things had to be taken care of or the citizens would soon find themselves sickly with disease.

As Keatara made her way through the occupied Keep, she saw how the Knights and citizens worked like well oiled machines making sure everything was in its place and working properly. If it wasn’t working, she saw how they all pitched in together to make sure it was repaired. Those Knights who weren’t repairing things or taking care of other chores were still working at the normal training Knights went through.

Before she knew it, a familiar voice was speaking to her from her right side and when she glanced over, she would see Aeolis walking in stride with her. As always, his silence was what set him apart from the humans that now inhabited the Keep.

”Good morrow to you Lofty One. I take it your rest was enjoyed. You certainly look a bit more chipper today than last I saw you. Not that you did not look good, mind you. Might I be of assistance to you again this lovely day the Gods have given us?”

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Pela

As Ceri excused herself, Pela watched the Elfess walk away and disappear into the city. The young woman could still feel the warmth of the touch of Ceri’s hand to the back of her own. As Rayann and Myth were getting ready to head off to be with their son, Pela approached before they could get too far away.

”Prince Myrh….beg your pardon sir. But….would it be against any rule if I walked around the city? I….I have never been to anything quite so beautiful. I give my word I will behave myself and will not cause trouble.”

Pela watched as Myth looked to Rayann who nodded ever so slightly then Myth looked back at Pela. He nodded ever so slightly with a small smile on his normally stoic face. Pela’s face lit up into a bright smile and she rushed forward in her excitement and reached to take his hand in hers then stopped herself remembering who he was and where they were. She quickly dropped her hands at her sides and nodded, still smiling.

”Thank you!”

As she turned to move about the city she didn’t catch the subtle nod Myth gave one of the guards in the area. As Pela began her exploration of the City of Silvanost, she soon discovered she had a shadow following her. While he wasn’t very subtle he did keep a discreet distance and she was appreciative of his consideration.

Her ice blue colored eyes couldn’t take in enough of the city’s beauty as she walked slowly gazing all around. It amazed her to no end to think the Elves lived in the trees in the intricate weaving of homes and bridges in the tops of the trees. But at the same time, there was plenty on the ground for her to see as well.

As she walked through the city she received curious gazes from the Elves moving about as well but she didn’t pay them any attention. For the first time she took more notice to the world around her instead of looking for the next threat or target that lie around the corner.

There was a sense of peace in this place she had never felt anywhere else. Knowing her time was limited, she walked slowly and let this sense of peace engulf her. It was a wonderful feeling and she lavished the feeling. If only Bad Rock could have shared this experience with her, she thought,. He would have enjoyed watching her.

She stopped near a beautiful fountain and sat down on the ledge. As the water poured into the pool making a soft gurgling sound, she sighed softly and looked into the ripples of the water. She could see her distorted reflection in the rippling water. Her distant thoughts were interrupted when another face joined hers. Furrowing her brows, she looked to her left and saw the face of the guard who was accompanying her around the city.

”Pardon the intrusion but the dinner hour has arrived and it is important you join the Speaker and his family.”

Pela felt her cheeks color once more as she stood up and brushed off the beautiful dress and robes Ceri had given to her. Nodding to the guard, she gave him a small smile and spoke quietly.

”Very well. Please guide me to where the dinner is to take place. And thank you for your assistance…..and escort.”

The guard nodded his head respectfully then gestured for her to follow him. Before she knew it Pela was standing outside a set of large, ornate doors. Her eyes were once more full of wonderment as she looked around. The guard told her Myth and Rayann and Ceri would be joining her shortly.

It had been quite a day for her and Pela could only imagine what the evening was going to bring. And for the first time, she was looking forward to spending time around a group of people.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Color_10Keatara grinned at Aeolis and his nickname for her, "Good morrow to ye as well, me friend. I be looking to purchase more of the soft clothing I wore last eve after me bath. I would also like to be finding work...something for me to do while I be staying here. But, I am not sure as to what." As they walked, she took in everything. The sights, smells, sounds. As always, the sound of children laughing brought a smile to her face as well as a look of sadness in her green depths.

As they walked along, Aeolis pointing out various buildings and sights to her, she spotted an elderly couple making their way towards them. The couple was holding hands, clearly still in love even after all the years together. Off to the right of them children were playing with a ball made from a sheep's bladder and stuffed with straw. They were playing in a small, bare area that looked like it had been put there just for that reason. She smiled, knowing how important it was for children to have time to be children when it happened.

A man on horseback was riding by where the children were playing, the children on one side of him and the elderly couple on the other when the ball was kicked out of the play area and rolled in front of the horse, startling the poor animal. Keatara saw the horse rear up in fear, lashing out and she saw how close the elderly couple was to the frightened horse. She moved with the quickness of someone who knew how to survive as she placed herself in between the couple and the frightened animal, it's hooves coming down right in front of her, missing her by less than an inch. "Easy....easy, boy....ye be alright. Just a wee ball, tis all", she said soothingly as she stood in between the elderly couple who would have been severely hurt had the horse spooked even more.

As the man regained control of the animal, a boy of about twelve summers came running out, slowing as he got to the man and horse. The man was clearly enraged and began to shout at the boy, threatening bodily harm to him and his younger friends for their insolence. Keatara began to see red and after making sure that the elderly couple was unharmed, she grabbed the bridle of the horse, gaining the man's attention to her.

"These be hard times, sir, but the wee ones need to be able to be children. No harm was done and the lad has apologized, very sincerely I be thinking. There be no need to berate the lad as ye are doing."

The man was clearly well off, his attire speaking volumes of his status as he turned icy eyes onto the small woman standing at his horse's head and holding it still. "Yes...these are hard times and as such the children should learn better manners as it appears should you." His voice was hard and cold as he spoke to her. "My horse or I could have been injured and that will not do. The little heathens should find somewhere else to play their petty games."

"Ye or yer horse? Have ye no care for the people around ye? Any of them may have been hurt as well but none were, including ye and yer horse. Mayhap ye need to be spending more time with normal folk then up there on yer horse looking down yer nose at those that I would imagine keep yer belly fed and yerself safe from the evil that is beyond these walls." Keatara's green eyes had turned stormy, her voice like cold velvet as she spoke to him, all the while stroking the horse's neck, keeping him calm. "As ye head wherever it be ye were heading, ye should be the one that is more careful, sir. There be more people walking than riding here, so ye be in the minority there. And from the looks of yer paunch, a little walking would do ye some good as well."

With that said, she gently released the horse as the very angry man rode away, mumbling beneath his breath at the audacity of a small woman. Keatara again checked on the elderly couple, smiling gently to them as they thanked her before she went over to the small group of children who were clearly upset by what happened.

"We're sorry, m'lady. We were trying to make sure the ball stayed in the play area...but Alvin..well, he got real excited and kicked it too hard." Keatara looked over at another little boy of about eight or nine who was more upset than the others and made her way over to him, smiling back at Aeolis. "I'll be just a moment, Aeolis." She knelt before the boy, making him look at her as she smiled at him, "Alvin..ye must be more careful. I know tis fun, this game of kicking the ball, but ye must remember that it be somewhat crowded in here. No one was hurt and that is a good thing, but ye must temper yer excitement." The boy smiled back at her, his eyes shining up at her as she stood up. She tousled his hair then returned to Aeolis. "Shall ye show me to the clothing shop, now? And, I would also ask ye a question if ye don't mind. Do you know a Sir Gideon Thorton? He be a knight and helped Tanjee and I last eve when little Cherub got separated from her parents."

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Saulfa11
Saul had not touched the meal that had been brought for him, sat and examined scroll after scroll, drawing after drawing and map after map. The young squire had returned and assisted him retrieve the scrolls and maps, finally Saul reached up and rubbed the bridge of his nose and stretched. Glancing over he saw the young squire slumped in a corner sleeping. Slowly he rose and walked over to the young man and gently placed his hand upon the young mans shoulder.
The young man jumped to his feet, stamming " I am so sorry Sir, I just sat down for a moment and..."
Saul smiled and said "No harm done young man, you sit back down. You have been working diligently for many hours." Saul then turned to the shelves and removed a stack of brittle parchments, the images faded nearly to invisibility. He handled then gently as he placed them back upon the table and sat before them.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 NolBanner

Nol listened as Arvandor spoke and when he addressed his "attributes" Nol blushed softly and cleared his throat. Raju hit him in the ribs with her elbow and gave him a smug smirk. He furrowed his brows at her and nudged her back just as Kellan was turning to look at him. The slight glow in his cheeks was still there and he simply smiled back at her trying to look as innocent as possible.

As Arvandor continued and gave Kellan his words Nol couldn't have been happier to hear the new course of her life. Things were going to be so completely different for her and the fact that Arvandor was offering himself for the training was simply beyond words. All this time Nol assumed that she would be learning with him but for Arvandor, the most experienced warrior of them all was without words. Nol knew that the transfer would come eventually but for now Kellan was going to be learning from the best the dragons had to offer, and Nol would most likely be asked to fly along with them to be mentored in Arvandors tactics.

As he then mentioned a more "personal" matter and they went inside Nol was curious to say the least, but he knew that he might not be allowed to be there when this matter was discussed, though secretly he hoped he would. As Kellan poured some Elven wine for them and the mood became more relaxed Nol and Raju waited anxiously to hear what Arvandor had to say.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Ceribanner

Ceridwyn approached Pela and smiled warmly. She was still in wizards robes but these were without the typical hood and were much more fancy than the others that Pela had seen her wear. The front was decorated with silver thread that sparkled and shimmered with every one of her slightest movements and formed intricate shapes of Elven artistic design. The robes were more form fitting as well, though they were still at the essence of them, robes. The sleeves weren't as long as typical robes either and they were cut at a long, sloping angle which started just below her fingertips and ended right above the elbow. It was obvious by the design that this outfit was designed and created specifically for her as it accentuated and emphasized every curve in the Elfesses body. As she approached Pela she smiled and nodded her head softly, "You look lovely Pela. Even as a human you are sure to turn some heads this evening."

Pela would know that her phrase "even as a human" was in no way meant as an insult and more as an indication that the Elves would see the beauty in her. Ceridwyn looked at Pela and smiled as the young girl's eyes were tracing the robes she wore. Ceridwyn spoke with a lilt in her voice, "I am a weaver and seamstress at heart Pela, I was almost 100 years old before I started down the path of magic, up until them I was learning to create garments out of cloth."

She smiled and tilted her head slightly as she looked over Pela's body, "I am sure I could come up with a few outfits for you that would compliment your tastes as well as your style, of course, only if you wanted me to."

She smiled again and then heard Rayann's footsteps even though the Prince and Bride were still two turns away from being visible. She turned to look at Pela, "The Prince and Princess approach."

Pela looked at her quizically as she looked down the hall and saw nothing but guards. Ceridwyn pointed about 15 seconds later, the exact second that Myth's foot came into view. The two of them approached and Ceridwyn smiled seeming them in their formal garments, "Good evening to you my Prince and Princess."

It was the first time ever that she had referred to Rayann as Princess, a true indication of not only where her loyalties lie but also the fact that this was a formal, royal event. She winked at Rayann's shocked face and whispered, "But you will always by Rayann, my best friend outside the courts and halls of this city."

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Pela

Pela was mesmerized by the intricate weaving of the thread with the material of Ceri’s robes and she couldn’t help but stare, slightly gape mouthed, as she watched it move about the Elfess petite form. It didn’t go unnoticed by the girl the tailored look of the robe either. It was one of the most beautiful pieces of clothing the young woman had ever seen.

When Ceri offered her services to her, Pela felt her cheeks grow warm and she looked down the dress she wore. Looking back up at Ceri, she smiled shyly and shook her head.

”You have been too gracious as it is. I cannot possibly allow you to offer your services for such finery. But I thank you all the same.”

As Ceri mentioned the Prince and Princess, Pela thought the Elfess was going daft. Of course she knew they had exceptional hearing but when she didn’t see anything for a few seconds, she was almost certain Ceri was hearing things. Turning her head to give the Elfess a puzzled look, Ceri pointed down the hall a few seconds later and Pela turned just in time to see Myth’s foot followed by the rest of him and Rayann.

Once more Pela was struck by how handsome the Elf Prince looked in his royal finery. And Rayann was practically beaming. She had changed, like Ceri had, into robes that were not near as heavy and accentuated her form as well. The red of the robes seemed to color her ivory cheeks and her dress beneath matched her hair almost perfectly.

Pela saw the Princes, as Ceri called Rayann, wore her hair down in the back past her shoulders but the front of it had been pulled back and twirled into a bun at the crown of her hair. The bun was held in place by a beautiful red, crystal rose that seemed to pulsate. In her arms was the child she took when the meeting was adjourned. Pela could see the strong family resemblance to his father as his hair was already a bright red and his eyes a shocking green. As Myth and Rayann approached Pela gave them a deep curtsy to show she understood the importance of respecting their station.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 RayannRed

Rayann carried Shaer in her arms and the child seemed very content to stay put in his mothers loving embrace. She walked next to Myth with a bright smile on her face now that she and her husband had been reunited with their son. There was no doubt the look in her lavender depths was there now because of Shaer.

As she approached Ceri and Pela, she heard he formal title Ceri called her and stood there with eyes wide and mouth agape for a moment. When Ceri winked and whispered to her, Rayann couldn’t help but laugh softly.

”For as long as I live, Ceridwyn Bol Sheras, I don’t think I will ever get used to hearing you call me that.”

She looked up at Myth then over to Ceri and Pela.

”I suppose it’s time for us to join the others within. I do hope it’s a bit more relaxed than the meeting earlier was.”

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Aeolis

Aeolis watched the events unfold between the rider and Keatara. As she grabbed a hold of the horse he was about to step forward and help but he realized quickly there was no need. AS she let the man know he wasn’t the only soul in Heartlund in need of things, he smirked slightly.

The Elf stood off to the side as the man rode off in a huff and Keatara spoke to the child. He saw there was a softness in the woman when it came to children. He saw it when she arrived and saw it now as he watched her console yet teach the child about the dangers of not paying close attention to their surroundings.

As things dispersed he stood there grinning at Keatara. She gave him a quizzical look and he didn’t bother to explain what he was grinning about. Aeolis had learned a long time ago humans were just as curious as his own kin when it came to certain things. And this was one of those ‘certain things’.

”Loftly One, I believe I know exactly what you will be an asset for and it will kill two birds with one stone, so to speak.”

As they started out again and she asked about the Knight, Aeolis quirked a brow and gave her a sly look.

”I am afraid I do not know of this particular Knight. However, as you can see, we are quite over run with them as of late. I would guess he is one of the many who have traversed here to aid his fellow comrades. I can do some inquiring for you if you would like me to. Being very discreet, of course.”

They stopped before a shop and Aeolis bowed slightly gesturing to the shop and smiled.

”I believe you will find what you are looking for within, Loftly One. I would accompany you inside but I have an errand I must run. I will send Tanjee along so she can meet you here. The ladies within are skilled seamstresses and will assist you in any way you need. And they are quite….how do you humans say it….clucky. I am afraid the likes of me would cause them to cluck quite loudly. Anyway….good day to you. I shall catch up with you later.”

With that, the Elf turned on his heel and slipped into the crowded Keep once again.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Color_10Keatara shook her head at Aeolis as he left, chuckling at his nickname for her. She took no offense...if anything, she welcomed it as it reminded her of her brothers. It was with that thought that her thoughts turned serious and her green eyes showed a little bit of sadness in them. She could hardly afford this reprieve with her brother still missing, but Madge had taught her that if she didn't take time for herself she would be of no help to anyone, let alone her brother. Sighing, she entered the clothing shop where she was immediately bombarded with two elderly women who bustled around her, asking her what she needed. Smiling at both of them, she told them what she wanted.

"I be needing new clothing, m'ladies. Soft material yet sturdy, traveling strength. No skirts, pants, tunics and blouses only. I also be needing a pair of boots to travel and walk in. Undergarments would be a welcome change. Have I come to the right place?"

She smiled as the women quickly went to work, taking her to a back room where they undressed her and took measurements. It had been so long since she'd had anything like this done and Keatara was enjoying every minute of it. The ladies were even gentle with her weapons, seemingly having handled weapons before for customers. Once they had their measurements they allowed her to redress then led her out to where the material was kept.

Keatara looked at various colors, patterns and materials deciding on a beautiful green suede like material, light tan soft suede material and then a dark brown deerskin like material. She gave the ladies instructions on what she wanted made, agreed to pay them half now and the other half when her goods were finished. She then asked where the shoemaker was located and with their directions headed there next.

Arvandor nodded in thanks as the tea was poured and handed to him. He blinked staring at Nol and Raju for a moment before waving to the seats. "Sit both of you... I would have already told you to leave if I didn't want you here." He chuckled as they sat before quieting himself.

Setting down the tea Arvandor's smile faded some. "A little history is in order first and for most, but I'll be kind and give you the short version. many decades ago I served as an emissary to the elven court. I was the personal guest of the elven ruler and his family. The Speaker of the Stars as they call him had two sons. Both eager to learn anything and everything and and they both had affinity for battle. I found their willingness to learn intriguing so I tutored them in the finer points of tactical warfare and schooled them in the basics of battle.."

Arvandor's eyes seemed as if they were looking into the distant past as he spoke. "In time it was decided that the eldest of the two would be given the honor of becoming a Dragonrider. Long story short I served as the dragon of the elven prince Jerrin.." He could see that while his tale seemed interesting he was rambling slightly.

He cleared his throat "In the long run Jerrin ultimately perished betrayed while on campaign. Even more to the point the younger prince had left Silvanost and rumor later turned to fact that he worked for the dark queen. More recently however I hear that the wayward prince has returned to his people."

The elder dragon leaned forward pointing at Kellan and then to Nol "I am curious what knowledge you both have about the elven prince Myth'alas and what has transpired that brought him back from the bowls of the Dark One's clutches."

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Mythban2

Preparations for dinner were as swift as Myth could manage them so that he could spend what little time he had with his son while they were in Silvanost. There was no wiping away the grin he had after playing with his son while Rayann prepared for dinner. It was remarkable how much he saw of himself in little Shaer.

Reluctantly Myth conceded that it was time to leave for dinner passing his son to Rayann Myth donned the remainder of his royal attire. The style was very much the same as what he had worn to council but the coloring was more in line with shades of night. With his hair bound in place once more he hooked his arm with Rayann's and they headed for the dining hall.

When they rounded the corner and saw Ceridwyn and Pela he nodded his head greeting the two woman but he said little else. His smile said enough of what he thought and he chuckled as he listened to his wife and Ceri carry on in their hushed tone. Myth stifled a sneeze making the funniest face as they prepared to enter the dinning hall. Before muttering "It will only be as serious or relaxed as father wishes it to be, no more, no less."

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 KellanBanner

Kellan listened and watched Arvandor’s expressions as he relayed the short version of his story to her. There was no doubt there was more to the relationship he had with Jerrin than his words relayed. It was the look in his eyes and the tone of his voice that told the Lady Knight he had become very close to Jerrin and his loss was a devastating blow to the Gold.

Glancing at Nol then to Raju before she looked back at Arvandor, Kellan knew how easily it was to grow very close to these powerful creatures. They were kind, compassionate, empathetic and sympathetic to the creatures that inhabited Krynn.

As the Gold spokme of Myth’Alas, the brows over Kellan’s eyes rose. She realized then what he was doing. And she couldn’t blame him in the least. But she also knew he would be quite pleased when he met up with the Prince once more. Glancing at Nol again, Kellan looked back to Arvandor and cleared her throat softly.

”I haven’t spent near the amount of time around Prince Myth’Alas as Nol has, but what little time I did spend around him I did notice one thing in particular. I believe it is the answer to the question you’re asking about what’s transpired. In short, love happened to him. He’s married now and has two children. A daughter named Kali and an infant son. His wife is a Red Robed mage. Her name is Rayann. And there is no doubt they love each other deeply. From what I understand, it was because of her he left the Dark Queens forces. But I don’t wish to speak incorrectly about things I don’t know the truth about. I’m sure Nol can give more insight to the details as he spent much more time with him and his family.”

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Healer

As Keatara stepped out of the seamstress shop, Tanjee was just approaching and waved in greeting to her, smiling.

”And a good morning to you, Keatara. You look very well rested. I take it your sleeping arrangements were not too displeasing. Aeolis said you would be here. Did you get fussed over by the women inside?”

She laughed softly when she saw the look on Keatara’s face.

”They remind me of the elders back in Silvanost. They were very similar. Only the ones back home were a bit more….how should I say it….stiff. It was all about being proper and not playing around in the mud. Please. A child must be able to be a child. Oh well. We need not worry about that now. Where are you headed now?”

When Keatara told her she was headed to the shoemaker’s place, Tanjee nodded.

”There is no shoemaker, per say. There is a wonderful leather worker though and he does a wonderful job at making boots. The man is very good at his trade. Although Aeolis swears he cannot make a good, soft boot to save his soul. I remind the toad stool eater all the time he is not Elven therefore his craftsmanship will not be Elven. He is slowly coming around to that way of thinking. Not that there is anything wrong with the human tradesman. Like I said, he is very good at his craft. You shall see.”

They walked along the crowded streets and talked about a few things for a few moments. They reached the leather workers place and just as they were getting ready to walk into the shop Gideon came walking out. He stopped and nodded his head to both women, smiling when he glanced at Keatara again. His dark brown eyes seemed to twinkle in the bright light of day.

”Good morning, M’Ladies. It’s good to see both of you again. I take it your accommodations set well with you?”

He was looking at Keatara when he asked the question and Tanjee smiled as she stood close to the human woman. Nudging Keatara gently with her elbow to get her to respond in some way to the man, she almost giggled when she saw the look on the woman’s face.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Color_10Keatara gave a small jump when Tanjee's elbow nudged her arm, "Oh! Ahhh...aye, aye...me bed was fine....I mean, me room was fine...I was verra comfortable. Thank ye...for asking", she stammered out, blushing a pretty pink as she tried to keep her eyes on Gideon's face and not looking around which would have been rude, but she failed miserable in her nervousness. "I was just...I be needin' new boots an' Tanjee mentioned that this man, he be good at his trade." She was nervous and intrigued at the same time. Her green eyes kept looking up into Gideon's brown ones only to look away quickly. ~My..but he be tall~, she thought to herself. ~Tall and verra handsome~.

Keatara looked over at Tanjee and saw the Elfess smiling at her. Her brows came together in a confused look at her before turning back to Gideon, "Well...I'd best be getting to me boots being made, Sir Gideon." As she spoke, she saw Gideon smiling at her and just her and lost her train of thought as her green eyes focused on his beautiful smile and adorable dimples.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Ceribanner

Ceridwyn nodded softly at Myth as he made his statement and turned to Pela, "This is a formal event so all accompanying the Prince enter first and then the Prince. I know you don't speak Elven and I highly doubt that common will be spoke within as this is a royal event and common is typically frowned upon. If I may with your permission I can place a spell on you that will allow you to speak Elven for the evening, usually the effects wear off in 10 - 12 hours."

Pela nodded almost enthusiastically and Ceridwyn's contagious smile crossed the Elfesses face, "Very well then."

She licked the tip of her finger and reached into her robes. As she withdrew it where she had moistened the skin was now covered in a reagent that smelled like rosehips and cinnamon. She leaned forward and placed a moist kiss on Pela's forehead and then rubbed the reagents across the young girls pale skin. Ceridwyn then began to hiss the ancient words of language, a spidery sound of woven mystery that caused the hairs on the back of Pela's neck to stand up. There was a small puff of light between Pela's eyes as the reagents reacted to the invisible arcane and Ceridwyn stepped back with a smile. She spoke again and this time Pela heard Elven but her mind understood every word, "Pai o ialaesal ti? (Do you understand me)". Pela nodded and her face lit up, Ceridwyn smiled again and nodded, "Very well then lily petal, in we go."

It was most likely unclear as to why Ceridwyn refered to her as "lily petal" but there was hardly time to ask as Ceridwyn lifted her hand and waved her index finger slightly to the right. The massive double doors opened and within was a fairly large gathering of Elven nobility. Ceridwyn turned and glanced at Rayann and Myth, the expression was one of "so much for a quiet dinner" and smiled graciously as she entered the room side by side with Pela. A Crier turned to the room and shouted "Royal representative Ceridwyn Bol Shoraes of the white and royal guest Pela."

The room stirred and hummed with the buzz of their arrival. The atmosphere was fairly positive and cheerful, the stuffiness of the court halls left behind. Ceridwyn stepped into the room with Pela and spoke to her mind, ~"Formal curtsy in three, two, one."~ The two ladies bowed low in a formal show of entrance and then stepped aside. The Crier spoke again, "Prince Myth'alas of the House and Courts and his wife the Princess Rayann."

The Prince and his wife entered, they of course didn't bow to the courts but walked down the long aisle to the head table and bowed only at the Speaker of the Stars, indicating their rank in the room. The doors closed and the festivities immediately resumed and the roomed began to buzz with sound, music and laughter.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 NolBanner

As Kellan finished Nol turned to look at Arvandor and continued, "As you know Myth was in the service of the Queen and came to be reformed, but I am sure the question of "how reformed" comes into your mind, it certainly did in mine when I heard. One can not discount the fact that the Silvanesti put him through the Ceremony of Darkness to test his heart and soul, and he did come through as reformed.

I have spent considerable time with the Padraig family at Glen Durel and witnessed his actions and his new direction, from my perspective there is no question as to the man's change from darkness. I would not begin to ask what god he might be serving now however, for though he does not serve Tahkisis any longer I have not seen him pay reverence to any deity. his wife Rayann Padraig has began wearing the red robes of Lunitari but did so by divine mandate more than personal change. and his daughter Kali was as well a servant of the Dark Lady but switched to wearing the red robes as well.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Healer

Tanjee was beside herself as she watched Keatara stammer and struggle to maintain her composure when standing face to face with the handsome human Knight. It was all she could do NOT to break out giggling but somehow she held herself together.

Gideon saw her nervousness and he couldn’t help but smile at the woman. He noted the amused look on the Elfess face as well and knew the mischievous creature was enjoying this way too much. Again he couldn’t help but smile. At least things weren’t so heavy they couldn’t have fun, he thought. Finally to save Keatara from further embarrassment and to calm her nerves, he nodded and looked to Tanjee then to Keatara.

”Ah, the man has a very good eye for his craftsmanship. I think you’ll find his work is well worth the coin you will pay. Take care. I need to report to duty. Perhaps I shall see you again. Ladies, good day.”

Turning on his heels he disappeared into the swarm of activity that took place in the crowded streets each day. When Keatara brought her eyes back to Tanjee she saw the Elfess grinning from ear to ear with a twinkle in her green eyes.

”Well, I would say we need to work on your response time. Honestly, I could swear the man was starting to get cob webs dangling from him as he waited for you to talk to him.”

Giggling, she ushered Keatara into the leather workers shop so she could get the boots she needed.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Pela

Pela was fascinated by the fact she could understand the Elven language as though she’d been listening and speaking it since her birth. It was a beautiful and elegant language that seemed to almost be more song like than spoken words. As the festivities kicked in, her blue eyes were wide with wonderment and curiosity and she soaked up everything like a dry sponge soaked up water. This was what it was like to be socialized and interact with others and she found she loved it. To a certain extent.

She was still a bit tense when too many people tended to get too close to her. Thankfully Ceridwyn seemed to always be there and pull her away from the crowd to a more open area. Pela was grateful for the Elfess’ intervention and the look on her face spoke volumes.

As the feast began in earnest, Pela took the time to sample just about every dish of food that was served. Of course there were a few things she chose not to try simply because the smell didn’t appeal to her but for the most part, she made sure to try all she could.

As the night progressed, she noticed how social the Elves were with each other and even herself. They were as curious about her as she was about them and meeting them on their own ground seemed to allow them to be more at ease with her. Several were curious about her relationship with Bad Rock and she was glad to talk to them about it. She still found it odd they were fascinated he would even bother to try and raise her. She knew his first instinct was to eat her but for some reason, he didn’t and for that, she was glad. She would never have been able to experience this moment in her life.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 RayannRed

Rayann sat with Myth and Shaer near the Speaker and his wife. She enjoyed hearing all about her mother-in-laws time with her grandson and thanked Rayann repeatedly for trusting her with his safety. While Rayann had never really spent much time with Myth’s mother, what little time she DID spend with her was well worth it. In many ways, she reminded Rayann of her own mother and while she longed for her mother she knew Myth’s mother would gladly offer what she could to her.

As the active toddler became less and less active, he eventually fell asleep in his mother’s lap to which Rayann was more than happy to just let him stay right there. One of the twin guards had approached to take him from her but she gently dismissed him telling him she would have to turn him over to his care too soon as it was. The twin understood perfectly and nodded his head respectfully blending back into the background once more.

She watched Pela interacting with the gathered Elves and saw the girl handling herself perfectly. Looking to Ceri she shared a smile with her friend then looked to Myth and smiled lovingly at her husband. Why couldn’t every day be like this, she thought. Perhaps one day it will be. She would try her hardest to make that happen.

Pulling herself from her thoughts, she turned to speak to Myth’s mother once more as they began to discuss their children’s adventures and Rayann was beginning to find out Shaer was more like his father than in looks alone.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Ceribanner

Ceridwyn was watchful of Pela but also allowed the young girl complete and free reign of the room. She was safe here and needed to explore what was happening for the experience it offered. The only times she would really step in was when she saw the curiosity of her people begin to smother Pela, then she would gently whisk in, excuse them for the moment to "show Pela something of interest" or "take her to freshen her beverage". She would then excuse her self as soon as possible once they were away from the density of the crowds, she didn't want to be a bother to Pela.

The Elves were all in good spirits for the most part considering their circumstances. Some of them would die, they knew that and accepted it. Ceridwyn watched the face carefully and felt a sense of incredible peace however, they all knew the dangers, but also the risk of taking no action. It had been a considerable amount of time since the Elves committed to open war but for now, there was still peace.

Ceridwyn caught the sight of the young noble who was assistant to the Speaker. He was dressed in his finery and looked quite the part of his station. There was something oddly familiar about him but Ceridwyn could not quite put her finger on it. She felt she recognized him but yet was fuzzy on the matter. She laughed at her self and shook her head, chalking it up to too much Elven wine and continued to mingle with her kin.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 OlwaBanner

Olwa entered from a small area in the back of the room. It was one of the escape routes for the Speaker should he be in danger or needed to make a hasty exit for any reason. It was a place were only a few selected could come and go, he being one of them. The two guards nodded respectfully as he made his way in. He glanced around with bright blue eyes and made his way to the head table. As he stopped in front he bowed first to the Speaker of the Stars and his wife, then to the Prince and Princess. As he looked up Rayann would recognize him as the young noble who had delivered the invitation to them from the Speaker. He smiled at her and then turned back to the Speaker, "My Speaker, I apologize for my tardiness, I was finishing the scribings for today's proceedings and vote. I left them on the left corner of your desk as you like."

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 SpeakerOfTheStars

The Speaker nodded and spoke, "My thanks to you Olwa, please enjoy yourself this evening."

Olwa bowed respectfully and smiled as he turned to join the rest of the assembled. He was immediately greeted enthusiastically by several other younger Elves who Myth'alas recognized as Archers of the Sky by the insignias on their upper sleeves, the elite and most promising of the Elven youth for archery and military skill. Myth'alas then saw that Olwa himself was wearing the insignia which set him above even those who greeted him, he had the same emblem of the Archers but it was trimmed in fine gold thread with a platinum arrow stretched across the bottom, the symbol of the current champion for their annual competition in marksmanship, stealth and survival.

The Speaker saw Myth'alas watching the young elf and he leaned to his son as he spoke softly, "That is Olwa, son of Sul. He is a better archer than his father and I dare say might rival even Jerrin someday if he stays on the path."

The Speaker only smiled sadly as Myth'alas raised his eyebrows at this comment. He nodded gently and leaned back to his seat.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Pela

The fascination with the Elves proved to be quite educational and exhaustive for Pela. Always striving to be the best she could be for whatever it was she was doing had her flitting about the room like a butterfly flitted from sweet flower bloom to sweet flower bloom. But it was clear the young woman wasn’t about to let anything stand in her way this evening. She had even smiled a bit more than she normally does and the reactions she received from the smiles let her know they were welcomed.

Forever thankful for Ceri’s intervention, she had just refilled her delicate goblet with some more wine, careful not to overindulge, when she saw the young Elf who gave the invitation from the Speaker to Myth and Rayann for the dinner. He was quite handsome indeed. She felt those strange fluttering in her stomach again and as she brought the rim of her goblet to her lips for another sip, she slowly moved further back, out of the open.

She found a nice place she could observe without really being seen as she stood partially obscured by a large pillar of white. As the young man bowed to the Speaker and his wife then to Myth and Rayann, Pela’s eyes never left his form. She saw Rayann nod to him then smile in return. When he turned back to speak to the Speaker, Pela moved to the other side of the pillar to watch further.

When he turned to join the rest of his kin in the feast, Pela saw how he was greeted by several young Elves. They were good friends, all of them, that much was plain to see. She smiled ever so slightly as she saw him share a laugh with his friends. Pela couldn’t help but wonder what it was like to grow up with people your own age and have such a friendship as he had with his fellow comrades.

As he began to move about the room talking to just about everyone he saw, she turned her back on the crowd and took a sip of the wine from her goblet. It was quite tasty indeed and she could see just how easy it would be to drink too much of it, but she tried to keep herself paced and not drink too much. Bad Rock always told her too much drink could be the difference between life and death.

The memory of her foster father brought a pang of grief to her and she took a deep breath letting it out slowly. If he could only see her now…..what would he think? No doubt he would be proud of her for he always told her she was capable of anything she put her mind to. But she still missed him terribly and as she stood hidden behind the pillar, she looked into her goblet at the red liquid inside. Her voice was whisper soft as she spoke to the wine within the goblet.

”Thank you, father. I understand now.”

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 RayannRed

Rayann smiled and nodded to the young Elf that emerged from the back of the room. He had an air of confidence about him that was mixed with humility. As she watched the young man mingle in the crowd with his friends, she listened to the Speaker telling Myth about his skills. Glancing back at the young man, she raised her brows. He was quite skilled but to think he would possibly best Jerrin, Rayann knew the young Elf was quite formidable.

Looking to the Speaker and Myth she saw the same look pass between them and she knew they both missed the elder Prince terribly. Especially now that Myth had returned to his rightful place. She placed her hand on Myth’s larger one and squeezed gently. When he glanced at her she smiled lovingly at him and let him know she understood his loss and shared his grief.

Looking over at Ceri, she saw her friend enjoying her time with her kin. The twinkle in her chestnut colored eyes and the rosy color to her cheeks spoke volumes. When Ceri looked at Rayann, Rayann smiled brightly and nodded, sending a missive to her friends mind.

~I’m so glad to see you enjoy the company around you, Ceri. And I love to see that smile on your face. It reminds me of a similar one you have when you see a certain Elf in Heartlund~

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 OlwaBanner

The softest of voices broke the silence that Pela stood in, "You understand what?"

The look of surprise on Pela's face and the instant flare of movement in the arcane field caused Olwa to lean back with a slight raise of his eyebrows. He brought his hand up, "I am sorry Pela, I didn't mean to startle you."

She looked at him crossly and he bowed his head slightly as he looked into her eyes, "Sincerely, I am sorry I didn't mean to startle, it was not my intent."

"If you would rather I can go and leave you to your thoughts."

He looked at Pela and she stared at him motionless for a moment, he was beginning to feel slightly nervous that he had truly done harm in some way when she finally shook her head no and smiled. He smiled and his face showed relief that he could stay. His blue eyes were as clear as topaz crystals and seemed to stare right through hers but there was a softness to them. He also had an air of confidence without being over indulgent or puffed up by the popularity that seemed to follow him. He saw the flush in her cheeks as she smiled and he spoke again, "My name is Olwa Pililinge, in Common tongue it means 'Branch Arrows of True Flight'. My family has for many generations been archers in the Speakers command. We are more or less the first and the last line of defense to the city. I am just graduating from the military training and have been assigned to the castle guard. Part of that duty for first yearlings is to serve as the Speakers aid, one month each as only 12 are admitted to the castle guard each year. It gives us a chance to get to know him and learn the movements of the castle routine. My week is up tomorrow, I am glad that I had the arrival of the Prince and Princess as part of my last duties."

He smiled and though he said nothing there was insinuation that meeting her was part of the reason, something that would not have happened if he was not assigned to the Speaker. He cleared his throat slightly nervously as Pela said nothing and merely smiled and nodded. Frankly he wasn't used to his natural charm not working for him, though he was not necessarily conscience of it he always seemed to suck people right in but Pela, she was different. She did a lot of looking and smiling without gushing all over him or fawning to stay in the conversation like most did... in a way it intrigued him and perked his curiosity.

"Have you seen the city at night from the balcony yet? It is quite a sight I can assure you."

She shook her head and he spoke in response, "Come, I will escort you."

She bristled at the word 'escort' slightly and he looked at her curiously, "No..., I um... I don't mean anything like that, I am not trying to get you isolated I promise."

He sipped his wine and she would feel the crack in his confidence, he was nervous too, she could feel it like a breeze had just began blowing across her face.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Ceribanner

Ceridwyn turned as she heard her friends voice and she smiled with a grin that spoke a thousand words of loving friendship in an instant. Her voice returned to Rayann's mind almost instantly, ~ "And it is good to see you holding your son." ~

When she mentioned 'a certain Elf' Ceridwyn's cheeks went slightly flush and she spoke to her friend, [i]~ "Oh my sweet Aeolis, how I miss him. I can't wait to feel his arms around me again. Though tonight is one of joy in Silvanost it is slightly dark not having him with me. Though the night is short tomorrow can't come soon enough."

The elder dragon listened to the two quietly as they spoke of the reformed prince. His eyebrow raised slightly when Nol spoke of the ceremony. It was an old and powerful elven ritual that he had seen many times while he was at court in Silvanost. Arvandor scratched his chin lightly as Nol spoke further smiling slightly until the moment he spoke of Kali. The elder's face frowned deeply before reaching for his drink. He could see that Nol had noticed the change of his face.

"So the prince found love, and love showed him the path back to the light. More amazing is that he was absolved by the ceremony. I assure you that speaks volumes considering the number of lives that it has taken. Though I imagine that the elven prince finds himself in quite the quandary in regards to his daughter Kali. You say she was wearing the robes of red which tells me you have not been updated recently on things in heartlund."

Arvandor sipped his wine setting it down looking at Nol and Kellan "In a recent report from one of the watchers in the area this young girl Kali has now joined the rogue mages and has taken residence in the once empty tower at the heart of the magical rupture. This happened shortly after a failed attempt by the knights to toppel the tower before it was claimed. A most curious turn of events."

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Mythban2

The notion of a peaceful evening was dashed when the doors opened and Myth's eyes fell upon a full blown banquet. He was not surprised by this given the events of the day. The elves had voted to go to war and they would take this night to celebrate peace before it shattered by the drums of war.

Myth mingled with the crowd shortly before joining his father's table as was expected of him. There were as many faces present that he knew and many he did not. From time to time someone would come to him with questions. Some asked about his thoughts of politics and others with questions of strategy. He was being probed quietly by the nobility to see if he had thought the matter through. He kept his answers short and polite answering only after careful thought.

When the young assistant appeared Myth was enjoying a break from the questions and he took note of the insignia the boy displayed. As he joined his friends. Myth's heart sank when Jerrin was mentioned. His thoughts wandered off for a moment wondering what his brother would think of things as they were. The touch of his wife's hand brought him back to the table and he smiled. "Indeed quite the compliment by his lord father. I shall have to witness his skills for myself. Between the two brothers Myth excelled in swordplay and Jerrin was the master archer, but both knew how to control the field of battle equally Myth sighed a miment taking a light drink before looking upon his son smiling.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 NolBanner

As Arvandor spoke of Myth being in a quandary over Kali Nol visibly moved forward to listen. When he mentioned that Kali had joined the rogue mages he furrowed his brow and looked at Kellan. He shook his head as he looked back at Arvandor, "Are you sure? I mean... Lunitari herself graced the girl with a second chance, as we have all just witnessed a visit from a deity is not a light thing, it grips the heart and motivates the soul. How on earth could she turn her back not just on the people of Heartlund and Solamnia but on the god of magic herself?"

Arvandor said nothing, there was nothing really to say, only Kali could answer that question. Nol turned and looked back at Kellan, he could see the slightest crack of questioning on her face. He nodded reassuringly to her and spoke to her, not to Arvandor or Raju who were also there, "Then she is our enemy, and we fight her."

Kellan would see it in his eyes, there was no lack of conviction in his face. He loved her and he would stick beside her, even if it meant attacking Kali, someone who he did care for. He turned back to Arvandor and spoke, his voice was filled with absolution, "It won't be a problem, my dragons will not hesitate if we face her, nor will I."

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Pela

Pela was at a loss. This was uncharted territory for her and she had no idea what to do or what was expected of her. Her nerves were on end but not like they were when she was in a hostile situation. It was quite different. As Olwa spoke to her she heard the sound of his voice and committed it to memory, as she did most people she cam in contact with. But there was more to his voice that she wanted to remember. Perhaps it was the way he spoke her name or the softness of the toe he used. Either way, she liked listening to him talk. It was one of the reasons she wasn’t saying much. That and the fact she was too nervous to say much at all.

As the subject of him escorting her anywhere was breeched, she furrowed her brow and narrowed those ice blue eyes of hers as she looked at him. Was he like the others who had tried to “escort” her places? IT was the way they looked at her and the way they tried to paw all over her that she took such pleasure in killing them. As her thoughts took a darker path, her wine goblet began to frost over as she unconsciously prepared for a confrontation. But Olwa’s use of the word was something totally different. He meant it most sincerely as manners and protocol required and she could tell. After all, she had an ‘escort’ earlier in the day when she ventured out on her own to see the beautiful Elven city. Not to mention she could sense he was almost as nervous as she was.

Chewing pensively on her bottom lip, she glanced over at Ceri who was having a good time with her friends and then to Rayann who was engaged in conversation with the Speaker and his wife. Bringing the goblet to her lip to Take a sip of her wine, that was now frozen solid, she realized what she’d done and quickly brought the goblet down and did her best to try and hide it. Finally she glanced back at Olwa, smiled nervously and nodded.

”I would love to see the city from the balcony”

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 KellanBanner

Kellan listened to what Arvandor said and as she heard about the ‘failed attempt’ and Kali’s change of heart, she felt as though her legs wouldn’t hold her weight but she clenched her jaw and forced herself to remain standing. Were her friends and comrades now dead, like Liam? What about Commander Fairwind? And….Trystan? Please, Paladine, don’t let that be the case. And what of Nol? He and Kali were in love….will he…?

No sooner had the thoughts run through her mind when she saw Nol turn to look at her. The look in his eyes was more than enough for her but to actually hear him state he would fight Kali, it gave her strength to face the truth of the situation.

Slowly Kellan stepped closer to Nol so she could feel the heat and let it envelope her suddenly chilled body. Nodding in agreement with Nol, she spoke as well.

”If she has made her choice to join the mages of the towers then she has set herself on the path of her choosing. As have we. We will face the three of them together. And what ever else we need to face to bring balance back to Krynn.”

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 OlwaBanner

Olwa let a very low yet audible exhalation out when she answered that she would go with him to the balcony. He smiled and nodded as the color slowly returned to his face and then motioned to her glass, he had not noticed it was frozen and his question was purely inquisitive, "Do you need a refill before we go out?"

She smiled and shook her head and he nodded, "Very well then, I will be back in two seconds."

He walked over to a small table that was very close and topped off his beverage before walking back over and offering her his elbow. She looked at it a very brief moment and then slipped her arm to interlock with his. He felt like electricity had just moved through his whole body and began to walk slowly with her towards a large set of open floor length windows that lead to a massive balcony. As they walked he stayed silent, he didn't want to be obnoxious or interject too much. As they made their way to the doors the cool breeze was just warm enough to be comfortable but just cool enough to tingle the cheeks. He walked her to the edge of the balcony which was trimmed with an extremely ornate iron work that looked like it had grown there more than it had been manufactured. He set his goblet down on a flat spot of the railing and gently took her hand and almost seemed to escort it back to her side now that they were at their destination. As he felt her skin he was mesmerized by how cold it was to his touch, it was almost as if she had nearly frozen water running through her veins. It was perplexing as much as intriguing. Reaching for his goblet he leaned onto the rail, his long blond hair swayed gently in the breeze, "That's my home there, the large oak with the spiral staircase around the trunk."

As Pela looked she would see the place he was pointing to. The 'staircase' was almost invisible against the trunk of the tree, it look so much a part of it one would almost mistake it for the tree itself. About 40 feet up however was a large porch and a door that obviously was the entrance to the house. It was merely a stones throw from the wall that surrounded the main courtyards of the Speakers castle. Clearly Olwa came from a family that had some privilege in this society. He turned and looked at her as he spoke again, "I still live there with my mother and father, I was only appointed to the ranks last month. It's customary to remain with one's parents until getting ranking but because their house is so close they encouraged me to stay until I finished my duties with the Speaker. Now that it's over I will need to begin thinking about that I suppose. We don't have barracks and military compounds like humans do, it's more or less open as long as you are strategically located to respond quickly should an emergency arise. We do have training areas, I am not sure if you have seen them but there are several. I don't know what the Speaker will have of me tomorrow, I will get my first assignment so that is exciting."

He stopped and flushed slightly as he hung his head, "I am sorry Pela, my mouth has run away with me, I should be learning about you, not boring you with the stories of where I live and my duties to the courts. Where are you from? I assume that you are an apprentice to Ceridwyn or Princess Rayann, in fact to have two wizards to be training from speaks volumes about what kind of affinity you must have for the arcane, your parents must be very proud."

Nol looked at Kellan as she spoke and nodded in affirmation. She would understand his non-verbal communication as he stared back at her. He turned and looked at Arvandor and spoke, "By your leave Arvandor, I need to address my dragons, they need to know about this turn as many are familiar with Kali and her family from working and assisting to rebuild their home after Rorie's attempted abduction of Kali's brother."

Arvandor nodded and Nol nodded in return, "By your leave then."

He turned and looked at Kellan, walked over and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead, "I will see you tomorrow after your training, if I know Arvandor he is planning on having you awake and in the sky by too dark o'clock."

He turned and looked at Arvandor and winked. He walked over to Raju and hugged her, whispering into her ear. His voice was too low to hear but as he was holding Raju it was apparent that while everyone was talking and discussing the events at Heartlund she had been crying silently in the background. She bit her lower lip and nodded, squeezing her eyes closed and attempted to keep the moisture contained under her eyelids as best she could. As Nol pulled back he touched her cheek gently and she nodded again. He turned to Kellan and smiled once more before turning and walking to the balcony. He was in his dragon form the instant he would clear the ceiling above and took to the sky disappearing around the side of the building.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Pela

Pela took a deep breath when Olwa offered her his elbow and when she slipped her hand between his body and his elbow, she could feel the heat instantly. But it wasn’t from him she could feel the heat. She could feel it coming from her. It was odd. She could feel the heat in her own body but it wasn’t uncomfortable. At least, not yet anyway.

Once they made it out to the balcony, she felt the chilled air wash over her and she closed her eyes for a moment letting the air cool her once more. When she opened her eyes Olwa was pointing to the large tree with the almost invisible staircase. As her eyes followed the stairs up to the house, she saw the strategic location of that tree and how high up the house was located within it. Looking back at Olwa, the significance of his family and their long line of duty wasn’t lost to her.

As Olwa spoke of his life and his responsibility to the Speaker, Pela realized the life of an Elf was really not much different than those of their human counterparts. The sense of family was strong. Perhaps even stronger than humans had. And for a moment, Pela felt a twinge of envy at the fact Olwa had such an upbringing. She quickly berated herself silently for such thoughts and all but lost herself in his story.

When he stopped talking about his life and spoke about her training with two wizards, she smiled shyly and nodded but when he mentioned about her parents being proud f her, she blinked and looked at him as though he’d grown a second head.

”I would not know. I was abandoned shortly after my mother gave birth to me. If it had not been for my foster father, I would have died. Even then it is a wonder I survived. His first instinct was to eat me but he said he could not bring himself to do so when he picked me up. He said I immediately stopped wailing and looked up at him. Of course there was plenty to look at. After all, he was a Netherman.”

Pela smiled brightly then as she began to reminisce about her life with Bad rock. She turned and looked out over the Elven city as she spoke with longing in her voice.

”He taught me everything I know today. How to fight. How to hunt. How to tell when a person is lying and when they speak the truth. He even taught me how to listen for their heartbeat and breathing as they talked. It is subtle things such as that I can tell….”

She looked over at Olwa and the look on his face brought her back to the hear and now. It was clear he was a bit shocked (and that was putting it mildly) about her upbringing. She felt her cheeks flush as her smile faded. Tucking the hair behind her ear, she looked down at her toes as they peeked out from the dress she was wearing then. Obviously the sheltered life Olwa lived was a far cry from the life Pela had lived and it clearly showed by the way he looked at her now. Finally lifting her head to look at him, she squared her shoulders and lifted her head as proudly as she could.

”But as to rather or not he would be proud of me….yes. I know he would be. And I would do all I could to keep his black eyes twinkling when he looked at me.”

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 Color_10Keatara was mortified at her reaction and it showed by the look on her face as well as her stance. All she wanted to do was head back to her room and disappear, but she couldn't do that and not draw attention to herself. Tanjee was still smiling at her and her comment about needing to work on her response time just drove home what little social skills she had. Even going to town with her brothers and father, she was only truly allowed to talk to her female friends as any of the young men had to go through the men of her family before even thinking about speaking to her. Oh, she was a tough young woman, a tomboy so to speak, but she only had experience with her brothers....not a man that she was attracted to.

She sighed as she walked into the shop and spotted a short yet stout man wearing spectacles. The whole store smelled like leather and she took a deep breath, enjoying it. Walking over to the man, she introduced herself, having no problems here as she was not in the least attracted to him. "Greetings, sir....I be needing a couple pairs of traveling boots, one pair being about knee high and flat soled with double stitching and a good strong sole to be able to take the rigors of travel. The other pair I be needing would be more mid-calf height, but just as soft and just as strong. I doan be a needing anything fancy, but I do need them to be neat and hold well together. Also, if ye could be able to, I be needed them to be able to stand up to water. I will pay half now and half when they are finished. Will this be agreeable to ye, sir."

The little man looked at her through his spectacles as if studying her then smiled. "Aye, m'lady. That be agreeable to me. It be nice to be hearing our brogue once more. Come....come, let's get ye feet measured so that I be making ye the best boots ye ever had."

Keatara's green eyes lit up at hearing someone from her homeland to the north. The two talked for a few moments, finding out that Mr. Sollars, the leather maker, knew her father and had made boots for him before he'd met and married her mother. He'd been from the neighboring village before it had been wiped out, his whole family killed as was hers. Then he spoke of Gideon and how he saw him talking to her and Tanjee, causing Keatara to blush.
"Aye....I see that look on ye face. Ye be taken with the young knight, m'lady. He be a good mon, but I know about yer brothers as well and how protective they were of ye. Tanjee here is a kind and good girl and ye couldn't ask fer a better friend. I overheard her say that ye need to be working on yer response time and she be right. Listen to young Tanjee and smile more, Keatara. Ye have a beautiful smile."

Keatara blushed again, looking over at Tanjee and seeing her trying to hold in her chuckles, finally smiling herself. "Aye, Mr. Sollars....I think that ye be right." Once the measurements were taken, Mr. Sollars told her to give him until tomorrow evening and he would have one pair finished. Little did she know, but he was going to decorate them with their Celtic colors and beadwork of their totem animals of the north....the bear and the wolf. One wise and loyal the other strong in mind and body.

Keatara left the shop with Tanjee and once outside, she turned to her friend and told her what had happened with the man on horseback, the elderly couple and the children. Then she told her about what Aeolis had said about knowing where to put her and killing two birds with one stone. She wondered if Tanjee knew what he was speaking of. As they walked, Keatara kept looking in the crowd of people, looking for a tall knight with gentle brown eyes and adorable dimples.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 4 OlwaBanner

Olwa did his best to hide his shock but she obviously picked up on it. A Netherman? How on Krynn did a Netherman manage to find it in his heart to take in a human child? Olwa was perplexed to say the least. As she continued and spoke about all her adopted father had done for her he was baffled. Then her smile faded and she stiffened her back speaking her last sentence. He felt bad, she had seen his expression. He nodded and spoke softly as he stared into her eyes, "I agree, I think that your father would have been proud. Most younglings are lucky to find one master wizard to take them in and train them, you managed to find two. I don't know the Princess very well but I know of Ceridwyn's skill and she is a lot less meek and mild as she seems when she needs to be. She is kind, as a child I remember she would come now and again to the castle and would sometimes kneel with us children of the court and play with us, most Elves never bothered and left us to ourselves as they did their duties, but Ceridwyn had a tenderness to her that simply wouldn't allow her to walk by without stopping. She always seemed sad however, no matter what her smile looked like there was always something."

He looked up at her and smiled, "I didn't mean to have a look on my face when you spoke about your father. Honestly to see someone as beautiful and delicate looking as yourself standing before me, to hear that you were raised by one of the most ruthless barbarian races on Krynn was just puzzling. I am sorry that your father died and that you have to live without him. I wouldn't want to live life without my parents. I suppose if anything I learned tonight that I shouldn't judge an entire race, that there are standouts in every culture and being."

He looked out to the city and inhaled deeply and then turned back to Pela, "For what it's worth, I am glad that he didn't eat you."

He smiled, trying to bring some levity into the conversation. Pela would feel that he was being real and genuine. The stiffness of when he was wearing the royal robes and acting as assistant to the Speaker seemed to fade the instant he was in these more casual clothes. As he looked into her eyes and Pela's eyes stayed locked on his she felt his hand gently lay on top of the one she had on the railing. His eyes glistened and he spoke, "You are the first human I have ever been this close to. Thank you for sharing a little of your life with me."

He could see Pela swallow hard and he knew what it meant though he was only 17 by human standards. She was nervous and he was too, he hesitated and then leaned back slightly, withdrawing so as to not scare her away. He simply brightened his smile and just left his hand resting on top of hers. It was fascinating again to feel the cold of her skin, it was unlike anything he had ever experienced, her skin was like ice despite how warm and inviting her face was, it was a puzzling juxtaposition of sensations that captivated him beyond words.

Suddenly movment caught his and Pela's eyes and he turned quickly to look off the balcony. Two butterflies, roughly an inch and a half in length each were tumbling and spinning in the air together. It was like a choreographed dance that the artists were performing flawlessly and Olwa spoke as the two younglings watched together, "They are the Tyjaer thol, it means 'crooked flight'. They live 99% of their lives as caterpillars in the trees and then find love only right before they die. They are special among the Elves because they remind us to seek the things that matter early and then spend our lives cultivating them and making them into something splendid. Unfortunately that line of thinking has also caused us to shut ourselves out. Many criticize the Dwarves for staying in their mountains and seeking metals but we are just the same, hundreds of years ago we closed our borders and have missed out on so much."

He turned and looked at Pela, "My Father disagrees with me that there is so much out there to see. He says that he has seen it and none of it is as good as what we have here, but I want to see for myself. I feel like I am half Kender sometimes, filled with wanderlust that won't let me sit still. I suppose I am much different than my kin in that way, I have no desire to simply stay in the trees and let the world spin without tasting what is out there. Perhaps someday I will get that chance."
