PostSubject: Re: Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund   Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Icon_minitimeMon Jun 13, 2011 2:14 pm

The sound of soft humming invaded Keatara’s sleep. It was soothing and sounded as though it was coming from way off in the distance. A faint blue light began to illuminate her normally dark sleep and she suddenly had the sensation of standing at the edge of a meadow of rolling, green grass. Above that blue became the azure blue sky and she felt a warm breeze flowing over her frame.

The soft humming continued and while Keatara couldn’t figure out where it was coming from, she didn’t feel the urgency to find out either. She began to walk through the grass and found it to be cool and soft on her bear feet. Looking down at herself, Keatara noticed she was wearing a simple cotton frock and not much more. Looking around to see if others were looking at her, she saw she was totally alone, but she didn’t feel alone.

That humming. There was something companion like about it and the more she heard it, the more soothing it became to her. The tops of the swaying grass tickled her fingertips as she walked by and she couldn’t help but let out a soft giggle. The humming stopped only long enough to hear the giggle then started back up again.

After a while she stopped next to a babbling stream and sat down on the bank letting the grass cushion her seat. The air was warm and she felt that warmth radiating into her body and she closed her eyes laying back as she let herself be lulled by the humming.

A soft, feminine voice took the place of the humming and as Keatara first listened, it sounded muffled. Slowly but surely it began to clear up, like she had been under water trying to hear someone talk and the closer she got to the surface, the better it was to understand them. Finally her eyes fluttered open and she saw the smiling face of an Elven woman looking at her. Strawberry blond hair that fell softly over her shoulders framed a delicate face with green eyes. As Keatara became more and more awake, she could hear the voice perfectly now.

”Welcome back. I was beginning to wonder if perhaps you were going to sleep the night away in this tub. I dare say the water has turned chilled and we had to add some more hot water to it to keep you from freezing. Come. You must be starving by now. I’ll take you to the mess hall so you can get some food in that belly of yours.”

The Elfess stood and turned to get a very large, terry cloth and hold it in front of her high enough so when Keatara stepped out of the tub the Elfess couldn’t see her nude body. As Keatara’s confusion began to fade, she would notice the ache in her side was no longer there and when she stood up and looked down, the bruises were completely gone. And as for that leg of hers….well….it certainly felt better than it had in a very long time. When she turned her confused gaze at the Elfess, the Elfess smiled and inclined her head respectfully.

”I hope you do not mind, but I took the liberty of seeing to your wounds. Gwendolyn came to retrieve me and by the time I was able to make it back, you had fallen asleep. I did not have the heart to awaken you to ask for permission so I took it upon myself to see to your needs. I am Tanjee, by the way. Cleric of Mishakal, the Goddess of Healing and it was through her grace and mercy your health was renewed.”

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Color_10Keatara came awake slowly and feeling fully rested. Upon seeing the smiling green eyes of the Elfess, she stood, allowing her to wrap the overlarge terry cloth towel around her, listening to her explain about her healing. She couldn't help but test her leg, so used was she to the muscles staying knotted for hours before finally loosening up. Now, it was as if she'd not traveled or fought at all on her way here.

"I thank ye, Tanjee", she replied, her voice softer than one would imagine a lady ranger's to be. "I doona ken how ye Goddess healed me through ye, but I am grateful to both of ye for it." Drying off, she noticed that a change of clothing had been set out for her. It wasn't her own clothing, but it was made to be comfortable and yet allow her to carry her bow, quiver of arrows, short sword and dagger. The pants were made of a soft suede like material and the shirt had a v-neck collar with lacings in front and short sleeves. The moccasin type boots were also made of the soft material. She dressed, enjoying the feel of the softness of the material against her skin. Her long hair brushed and pinned back by Gwendolyn she felt human again and as she took in a deep breath she could smell the soft jasmine that now floated around her. Gwendolyn had explained that her clothing would be taken to the room where she would be put up for however long she chose to stay. She turned her light green eyes to Tanjee and smiled then chuckled as her stomach growled loudly.

"Aye...I do believe that me belly would greatly appreciate some food, Tanjee. I am Keatara Ulengard from the far north. I fear that I was rude to the first elf that aided me when I arrived. He introduced himself to me but I did not not introduce meself to him. I hope to rectify that, Tanjee for he was kind to me as ye hae' been."

She noticed that Tanjee had an idea who she was talking about as she slung her beautifully carved bow over her shoulder, but chose to not say anything as she followed her to the mess hall, her stomach growling even more at the smell of food.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Healer

Tanjee waved off Keatara’s apologies as she led the young woman out of the bath house and towards the Keep proper. As they weaved their way through the sea of bodies, Keatara would notice the hour was growing later as the sun was well on its way past the zenith. Many of the Knights that passed them by smiled and nodded their heads in greeting now and Tanjee smiled back at them.

”Do not worry over him. He has been plenty rude before in the past so it is of no surprise others would be rude to him sooner or later. Not to mention he is quite the stick in the mud. He can be quite….ogerish at times as well. Do not let his politeness fool you.”

As they got closer to the main Keep, Tanjee leaned in closer and lowered her voice as though she were trading a secret with Keatara.

”Rumor has it he ate one too many toad stools when he was younger. I for one think it has picked his brain to such incapacity he cannot remember what day it is let alone how to be nice to others.”

Tanjee smiled as she led Keatara through the large, long hallways heading for the mess hall. As they approached, Keatara could hear the sounds of men talking and occasional boisterous laughter. As they got closer, Tanjee looked over at Keatara and smiled again.

”Do not be worried when we walk in. The Knights may seem ferocious but they are all quite honorable men who would never raise a hand to harm you. But they are battle hardened and on occasion, they forget there are females in the room with them.”

As they turned the corner and walked through the large doors that led into the mess hall, the room that had been quite loud with talking suddenly came to a hush and the sound of benches and chairs being pushed over the stone floor filled the area. The Knights that had been sitting were now standing and the Knights that were standing now faced the door. It took Tanjee some time to get used to the reaction from the Knights, but now, she merely waved her hand in a sitting motion.

”Please….how many times do you all need to be told to stop doing such a thing whenever I walk in the room? Sit down and enjoy your meals.”

Ever so slowly the room began to sit back down and take up their conversations where they left off but as they moved through, Keatara would see the glances in their direction and the whispers passed among the gathered crowd. Tanjee ignored them as best she could and hummed softly as she gathered up the food she wanted. Waiting for Keatara to get hers, she moved over to the end of a table that was empty and sat down. As Keatara sat down across from her, Tanjee smiled at the woman.

”You will find the food is not as lavish as other Keeps but it is good tasting and nutritious.”

She had no more said that when Aeolis seemed to appear out of no where and sat down next to Tanjee setting his wine goblet on the table and looking over at Keatara smiling.

”Ah. I see you have met Tanjee. And from the way you are not limping now, it appears as if you could not refuse her insistence of her gift. I have to say, not many can tell her no and get away with it. She is quite head strong when she sets her mind to a task.”

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Color_10It did not go unnoticed by Keatara, the reaction the Tanjee received inside the mess hall from the Knights. Nor did Tanjee's waving it off, drawing even more respect from the northern woman. Gathering her food, she followed her to the table and sat down across from her, beginning to eat the hearty stew with a large roll and a slice of apple pie for dessert.

"I have no need for lavish food, Tanjee and growing up with four older brothers....the Knights willnae bother me. Give me simple but good and I be happy." She then turned her gaze to Aeolis as he sat down next to his sister and spoke. She smiled at him, "It was not her, Aeolis....it was little Gwendolyn who wouldna' take no for an answer. But, I am thankful nonetheless to both. I am Keatara Ulengard from the far north. I apologize for me rudeness earlier. Ye'd introduced yerself to me yet I did not do the same. Thank ye for guiding me to the bath house."

She continued to eat, trying not to giggle as she remembered what Tanjee had said about Aeolis and toadstools. She sipped at her wine then continued eating, showing very good table manners for one who traveled about, usually alone.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Mythban2

A messenger was sent to Ceridwyn's to inform the ladies that the council would convene after the evening bell, and that Myth himself would meet them at the entrance to the council chambers. There were a couple matters for Myth to attend to before the meeting. For Rayann and Ceridwyn this meant meditation, a change of attire, and a fresh coat of polish to his sword and gauntlets.

Come that evening Myth met them as he promised. He stood outside the chamber of the elven council dressed in all his princely glory. This would be the first time Pella would see Myth dressed for court, but for Rayann and Ceri it was a sight seen only rarely lending gravity to the situation. From head to toe Myth wore a mix of royal purple and forest green. Admittedly he always looked out of place wearing the regal robes of a royal but when the time came he looked every part the prince that he was. The only deviation from the usual noble attire was the armor on his forearms and the blade at his side.

Emerald eyes stared into the sky as Myth remained lost in thought as he waited for his wife and friends. When a familiar presence drew near his eyes shifted to the entrance they would come through and he waited. The only movement he made was to adjust the red braid that was his mane of hair.

*****************************

Arvandor watched as the assembly concluded from his perch in the shadows. This woman would be the first human rider in more than an age, and he was skeptical of whether or not she was up to the task. However she had the blessing of the god Paladine and that was enough to erase a great deal of his skepticism, but not all of it. As the assembly came to an end he emerged from the shadows in the guise of an aged elven sage and looked to the High Born. He bowed low knowing that the ancient gold was aware of his thoughts, opinions, and concerns.

"I will do as has been asked of me and see to their training and protection."

There was a slight nod of the high born's head to which Arvandor responded to in kind. "Do I have your blessing to inquire about the other matter we discussed?"

There was a long silence and neither dragon moved until finally the high born nodded once more. With a sigh Arvandor bowed low to the high born before his body became as mist and blew away with the breeze that flowed through the great hall. The mist flowed out of the hall before gathering outside upon the main path outside of the high born's hall. The mist gathered and expanded before fading away leaving the stretching for of the elder dragon. Arvandor

Arvandor like any dragon of his age was noticeably larger than his younger kin. A testament to his age, but he was by no means near the size of the high born himself. He still had many centuries of wisdom and physical growth to cover before he could think of being that venerable. A few lumbering steps and a snap of his wings and Arvandor was aloft taking to the air. The sensation of the wind upon his scales brought a grin to his face as he climbed before leveling off and shifting his path towards the location of his wards.

"Best to get the introductions out of the way now" he grumbled to himself." It would not be long before he was noticed of that he was certain.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Ceribanner

Ceridwyn had been feeling slightly anxious all day, the thought of facing the council was not the issue, it was the weight of the situation and the potential outcome that worried her. She was fairly certain that the Sylvanesti would go to war, the world was literally at stake and she knew the Speaker understood this. The issue was more that there was still a chance the ruling would come back in the negative and then they would be stuck. Would Myth still return if that happened? She knew she would, there was no question in her mind, but Myth had a lot more to loose than she did, as did Rayann, and the fact was the Sylvan could withstand a lot before they fell, but ultimately they WOULD fall.

The summons finally came and she looked at Rayann with the most nervous smile her best friend had ever seen and they walked with their royal escorts to the Chamber of the High Council. Myth was waiting as promised and as Rayann greeted him formally instead of their usual, affectionate manner, Ceridwyn knew that this was all for real. The Crier entered the Chamber and announced that the delegation was here. Myth'alas entered first, his wife at his side and Pela began to step right in behind him. Ceridwyn reached and gently caught her by the sleeve and tugged gently to tell her to wait. As Myth'alas and Rayann walked down the long aisle Ceridwyn glanced at Pela and whispered to her mind, ~ "We are not permitted to enter until the arrival of Prince Myth'alas is announced, then the Prince himself will introduce the rest of the party to address the delegation." ~

She softly softly and winked that it was perfectly alright that she didn't know this and turned to look down into the chamber again. The Chamber of the Speaker, she had not seen it since the Prince's Trial of Darkness. How different it looked now that it was lit with the glowing lights of magic set by the wizard's of the city. It was a much more cheerful place now, but the stuffy pompousness of the Sylvan still lingered in the air. She inhaled deeply and watched from afar as the Prince addressed the Speaker, gestured for his wife to take her place and then turned to look down the aisle to the end of the chamber.

He raised his arm and gestured towards Ceridwyn and Pela, announcing that he had others who's testimony was to be heard before the Council's decision and Ceridwyn glanced sideways to Pela and nodded as she whispered softly, "It is time young one, welcome to the world of politics."

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Aeolis

Aeolis quirked a brow and grinned at Keatara when she mentioned growing up with four older brothers. He looked to Tanjee then grinned even m ore.

”And you thought you had it rough with just one brother. Perhaps you should take a lesson from this one and see just how fortunate you were, Seler’ ”

Tanjee rolled her eyes as she popped a grape into her mouth and gave Aeolis a sideways glance.

”My one brother was more trouble than any four I could have had. I am just glad he finally came to his senses before it was too late.”

Aeolis looked hurt and placed his hand over his heart feigning pain.

”You wound me with your needle like tongue.”

Tanjee picked up a piece of bread and used it to point at Aeolis with.

”Be glad it is just a needle and not something far sharper and much larger.”

Aeolis chuckled and shook his head.

”Still as stubborn as you were as a child.”

Tanjee nodded and popped the bread into her mouth. Aeolis looked over at Keatara then and smiled.

”To lie down lofty. Somehow I do not see you as either.”

When Keatara gave him a puzzled look, Aeolis smiled.

”In our language, Kea means to lie down and tara means lofty. But we shall not tell anyone that cannot speak our language. We do not want them to get the impression you are a push over for you certainly are not.”

He looked over at Tanjee then.

”I have secured her a room in the loft over the northern stable. Will you please see to it she finds her way there?”

He looked to Keatara then with an apologetic look on his face.

”I fear it is the only place we could find room for you, Keatara. The loft has been sectioned into makeshift rooms with plank walls separating them. They are clean and warm as the nights are still chilled and the northern stable houses females only with female Knights as guards to insure the occupants remain such. If you will excuse me, I need to discuss some business with one of the commanders. Good night, ladies.”

Tanjee nodded and watched her brother stand up and leave as quietly as he approached. When they were alone once more Tanjee looked over at Keatara and smiled.

”The loft of the northern stable is actually quite nice. I think you will like staying there. If more appropriate accommodations could be made, they certainly would be.”

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 RayannRed

When the summons came for the mages to join Myth at the Council doors, Rayann gave Ceri a steady look and saw her friends nervous smile. Rayann was feeling much the same way but she refused to let it be seen. She was the Prince’s wife and as such, she was expected to show she could be composed at such a formal moments. Even though she wanted to do nothing more than be alone with Myth right now.

As they reached where Myth awaited, she gave her husband a loving gaze but withheld any outward affection. Now was not the place or time for it. Placing her smaller hand on top of his larger one, she squared her shoulders and straightened her back as she walked beside him into the Chamber of the High Council. She could hear whispers among the gathered and she knew what they were whispering about. While it didn’t set well with her, she knew what they were whispering about but there was nothing she could do to prevent it. She knew full well what would happen the moment she gave her heart to the handsome, crimson haired elf. And she gladly accepted that for her love for Myth far outweighed anything.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Pela

Pela’s eyes fell upon Myth as they approached and she saw why Rayann was so much in love with the large Elf. He was the most handsome male she had laid eyes on at the moment and she felt her heart flutter slightly when he turned those emerald eyes upon her and nodded. She felt her cheeks grow warm and she gave him the slightest of shy smiles before nodding in return. Snapping herself out of her admiration of the Prince when Rayann walked up to greet him, Pela silently berated herself for such thoughts and got ready to fall in behind Rayann and Myth.

When she felt Ceri tug her arm and she turned a quizzical look upon the dainty elf. As she heard Ceri’s voice in her head explaining what was about to happen, Pela settled back down next to Ceri. She would let this wise and gentle woman guide her through this whole formal process. There was only one other time she’d ever been introduced to something so formal but it was under far different circumstances. Not to mention quite possibly the chance she would have been killed by the Dark Queen herself.

As they walked into the Chamber of the High Council, Pela was awestruck at what she was seeing. Her slippered feet were silent as she walked along the floor but her eyes were looking in every direction. If her head could have turned completely around, it would have. Her ice blue eyes were wide with wonderment for never in her life had she seen such beauty in one place. Even the Elves that were gathered within all had a beauty to them. Men and women alike. Were all Elves such creatures of beauty, she thought?

Finally they stopped and Pela pulled up next to Ceri keeping her eyes straight ahead. Now was the time for restraint and as much as Pela wanted to look around at this beautiful place, she knew they were hear for a specific reason and that reason was for all of Krynn.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 KellanBanner

Kellan caught movement in the sky as she held onto Nol. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she realized the larger dragon had set a path directly for she and Nol. She was familiar with almost all the dragons on the isle but this one she’d never seen before. Slowly releasing her arms from around Nol, she stepped back and pointed. When Nol turned around to see what she was looking at, she spoke softly to him.

”Nol? Who is that heading for us? I’ve never seen that dragon before.”

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 NolBanner

Nol felt Kellan release and turn. As she pointed he followed her finger but it didn't take any sort of extra eye sight to spot the massive golden dragon as he swooped up and over the city. He turned and touched her shoulder, "That is Arvandor, and no doubt he is heading here."

As Kellan looked at him and smiled reassuringly and spoke again, "He is general council to the High Born, and it would not surprise me if he succeeded our wise king as leader, just be yourself. By coming here instead of addressing you in the High Borns Lair you can be assured that the visit will be less formal however it is his job to confirm the decisions of the High Born so be prepared to answer his questions for there may be many."

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 RajuBanner

Kellan turned and looked at Raju. She smiled and nodded in confirmation of what Nol said just as the whole balcony shook from Arvandor's impact. He was smaller than the High Born but not significantly. Kellan would notice that he was certainly much larger than Nol and Nol was fairly large for a silver dragon. As Arvandor landed and looked over the three Raju and Nol immediately went to a knee and Nol was happy in his heart when he saw Kellan do the same at almost the exact same time, "good," he thought, "she understands."

Arvandor instructed them to rise and they did, facing the large gold and waiting for his words.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Sirtrystan

Trystan was working his way across the main courtyard of Heartlund City when one of his aids approached and spoke, "A small band of refugee's has made their way to the city, Aeolis intercepted and with his sister they took care of them."

Trystan turned and looked at him, "Took care of them??"

"Aye sir, there was some elderly and children but also one other who was heavily armed and showed experience in battle."

Trystan furrowed a brow and nodded, the last thing he needed right now was a wild card or even worse a spy from the Dark Ladies forces. He didn't even consider that she would be from the Magi, they could spy without sending people. He nodded and spoke, "Thank you Egdar, I will find Aeolis and get his briefing on the matter."

"One other thing sir."

Trystan turned and looked, "Yes?"

"They gave her refuge without authorization and gave her accommodations."

"Where?"

"Loft of the north stables sir."

"Thank-you Edgar, post a guard to watch him for 48 hours and report back to me with her patterns."

Edgar saluted sharply and was about to leave when he stopped and spoke, "It's a female sir." With that he turned to attend his duties. Trystan reached up and rubbed his forehead, the exhaustion in his face was obvious and he inhaled deeply. Managing the resources of so many new additions to the Keep was hard enough but now he needed to follow up on anyone that entered the Keep with so much as a dagger. His men weren't helping the situation, they were suspicious of anyone that came into the walls.

He turned and headed out looking for Aeolis. He was by no means upset with his Elven friend, but he did need to at least get this newcomer logged. He went into the main wall of the Keep and found Aeolis almost immediately coming out of the Keep. He smiled and walked over to his friend, extending a hand and speaking, "Good morrow Aeolis."

They shook hands and Trystan motioned, "Please, come over here where it is a little more private."

The two walked over to a small corner in the wall between the structure and one of the towers. Trystan looked up at Aeolis and the exhaustion was obvious on the human's face, "I received a report that you brought in a refugee who was armed and potentially battle hardened and offered her room and board without authorization. Now I know you and your instincts well enough that I trust you implicitly however the men are on edge and immediately brought it to my attention. If you could just do me a favor and give me your report on this warrior I will add it to the logs so the men will stay settled down." He smiled and winked, it would be clear to Aeolis that he was going to side step this situation and make it look like Aeolis simply had not yet given the report over.

He looked at Aeolis again and spoke, "If you could, please tell me about her, where is she from? Who was with her?"

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 TeirzaBanner

Teirza was making her way through the main square when she spotted a Knight who looked like he was more in command than the others. She followed him from a distance and watched as he exchanged words with another Knight. He looked very tired and dismissed the man before making his way into the main Keep. She followed as far as she could before one of the guards at the draw bridge looked down at her, "Sorry little one, no one outside of the military is allowed in the Keep. There's a Friar about to tell stories over there if you are looking for something to do."

She looked over her shoulder and could see what the soldier was talking about and then back at the soldier. Her hollow eyes instantly captivated the man and she spoke softly, "No thank you sir, I am not much for stories with happy endings."

She turned and walked away, settling into a small area near the gate and watching for the commanding Knight to exit the gate.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 KellanBanner

”Arvandor?”

The name slipped past Kellan’s lips as more a whisper than anything. She hadn’t expected to come in contact with the Dragon General yet. When, exactly, she wasn’t sure, but she didn’t think it would be THIS soon. Of course, there was no better time then the present to start getting things ready for what is sure to be a very uphill battle.

Literally.

As the large gold dragon landed on her balcony, Kellan followed suit with Nol and Raju. This dragon deserved as much respect as the High Born and she wasn’t about to sell him short of what was due him. She couldn’t get over the size of him. He was quite large and while she had grown accustomed to the larger, older dragons, they still had the ability to intimidate her. And Arvandor was no exception.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Aeolis

Aeolis left his sister and Keatara and wove his way through the Keep looking for Trystan. The man had disappeared for a while and Aeolis knew whatever he was doing had taken him away from the immediate area. It was no surprise when Trystan found him and started asking about the group of refugees Aeolis had allowed refuge for. As Trystan spoke to him Aeolis noticed the exhaustion on his friends face and clasped his shoulder.

”You could use a good nights rest, my friend.”

Pleasantries out of the way, Aeolis gave his report to Trystan.

”Her name is Keatara Ulengard. She’s from the north. She has not stated specifically but considering the others traveling with her, it appears they may be stragglers from near North Keep. I spotted them a good hour before they reached Heartlund’s perimeter. They stayed well within the confines of the trees but they were not staying there to deceit the Keep. They were being extremely cautious. As for the people with her, there were ten of them with her. Three men, four women, and three children. One of the women was an elderly woman who could barely get around. Keatara walked with a noticeable limp and from what I observed from the battlements, she had seen her fair share of trouble but I would not go so far as to say she was experienced in battle as you and I are. It looked to be more survival than anything. But that is not to say her skills were not good. She had, after all, gotten the others here. While I am no mage, I do have an affinity to magic and I felt no such thing coming from any of the group. Least of all her. I have not been able to talk to Tanjee alone but if my sister has given her the gift of healing, then I would say the woman is deserving. She is down to earth and I believe she would be someone who could lend a hand. I will pass on the word for Tanjee to watch her and the others if that would make you feel better. I, of course, will also be keeping an eye on them just to make sure. When Ceri and the other mages return, we could ask them to determine the groups true nature without being noticeably intrusive.”

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Color_10Keatara chuckled at Aeolis' explanation of what her name meant in their language, not taking offense to it. When he left, she couldn't help but watch him leave before turning her attention back to Tanjee. When she noticed the Elfess watching her, she blushed. "Sorry....that be rude of me", was all she said as she went back to finishing her meal.

Once done, she finished her one goblet of wine, "Thank ye, Tanjee....for everything ye and yer brother have done. Will the group I led here be taken care of as well?" Upon Tanjee's answer that they would be, she relaxed even more, clearly worried about the small party she'd led here. But, that was her way, worrying about others instead of herself. Yawning, she smiled over at the Elfess, "I think that bed over the northern stables be a calling to me. If ye have things to do, Tanjee, I should be able to find it. I doan' want to keep ye from anyone who may need yer gifts."

As she got up to leave, she heard a small voice yelling her name, "TARA!! TARA!!!" Turning, she saw 'Cherub' and her face lit up with a smile, her green eyes sparkling suddenly. "Cherub!!! What are ye doin' here?!! Where are yer parents?" She scooped the little girl up into her arms, noticing that there were dirty tear tracks down her cheeks. "What is it, little one? What's wrong?"

"I got lost, Tara. There was a small dog and I liked it and followed it and then I got lost. I smelled the food so I followed it and saw you."

Keatara sighed, hugging the small child to her, "Well, then....I suppose we be needin to get ye back to ye parents. I would imagine that they be worried sick." Turning, she looked at Tanjee, "Cherub, this is me new friend, Tanjee. Tanjee, this be Rosilee, better known as Cherub." The little girl, thumb stuck in her mouth, head on Keatara's shoulder stared at Tanjee with wide, blue eyes and a soft 'Hi' fell from her lips. "Can ye help me get her back to her parents? I'm not sure where they would have been taken."

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Healer

Tanjee noted the way the human woman watched her brother. Oh, she thought, do not do that for your heart will be broken when you discover the truth. As Keatara got up from her seat to turn in for the night, Tanjee stood up as well and was getting ready to walk out with her to show her where the northern stables were when a panicked child’s voice split the air. Instantly several of the Knights stopped what they were doing to turn their attention to the child. Their heightened awareness had them on edge to say the least so when a child came crying and running, they took note of it to make sure it wasn’t something serious. As the child jumped into Keatara’s arms and explained what happened, they relaxed and went back to their conversations.

Tanjee watched the exchange between the young woman and the child. As she listened to what the child was saying, she smiled. As introductions were made, she reached her hand out and stroked the girls hair with her hand.

””Greetings little one. It is nice to meet you Cherub. Such an appropriate name for such a beautiful child.”

As Tara asked Tanjee if she could help her find the child’s parents, Tanjee nodded.

”There are a few places we can check but I am sure it will not be difficult to find them. Parents missing a precious child will be just as panicked looking for the child.”

As Tanjee led Tara and the child out of the mess hall, conversation slowly halted and all eyes turned to watch them all leave. Tanjee smiled and nodded to several of the Knights and squires as they passed by and received smiles and nods in return.

It didn’t take them long to find the girl’s parents. True to Tanjee’s words, they came across a young Knight of the Crown who was walking with a couple who had the look of sheer terror on their faces. As the reunion between the parents and their missing child took place the young Knight nodded to Tara and Tanjee. He had dark brown eyes and his black hair was cut short. He was quite tall standing easily well over six feet and therefore towered over Tara and Tanjee. There was a subtle gentleness to his fierce presence though that seemed to relax those around him.

”They were terrified for their daughter. They said they were preparing their bed for the night and had takentheir eyes off her for only a moment and when they turned around, she was gone. How she got this far without someone asking her where her folks were is beyond me. But with all things considered, we are all quite busy with our tasks. We’ll spread the word to keep a better watch on the children.

He looked at Tara again and gave a slight smile. Tanjee saw the exchange and she smiled.

”We are most appreciative of your diligence Sir….?”

The Knight stood up a little straighter making his imposing size seem even bigger. He smiled and when he did, he dimples that gave him a suddenly boyish charm.

”Sir Gideon Thorton, M’Lady.”

Tanjee smiled and nodded her head respectfully

”Sir Gideon, I am Tanjee and this lovely creature is Keatara Ulengard. And the adorable child was Cherub. It is noce to make you acquaintance.”

Gideon was looking at Tara and smiling when he heard Tanjee and he blinked then looked over at her again.

”You are the Cleric of Mishakal then?”

Tanjee nodded and Gideon blinked again.

”Paladine has truly blessed us with your presence and your Goddess’ gift. If not for you….”

Before the young Knight could go on any further, Tanjee interrupted him gently and smiled.

”Please….I only do what my Goddess grants me the ability to do. It is her you should be praising. I am just the vessel in which she works through.”

Gideon nodded once more then looked to Tara and smiled again.

”M’Lady Keatara, I look forward to seeing you again. If you will both excuse me, I need to get back to my duties now that the child has been found. Good eve ladies.”

With that, Gideon turned and walked back in the direction he’d come from leaving them standing there. Tanjee looked over at Tara and grinned.

”Quite the handsome man, would you not agree?”

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Sirtrystan

Trystan looked at Aeolis thankfully and nodded. "I am sorry if I was forward my friend, this whole place is a madhouse and there has been no end to the chaos, if I came off as forward I apologize."

The look on Aeolis' face said it all and Trystan laughed, "Thanks friend."

Trystan left and walked through the gate of the Keep and back out into the city. As usual the place was absolutely bustling with activity and it seemed there were so many people in the city now that the walls would burst at the seams. He moved quickly towards the town square where the portal had been created and went to speak with the guards.

As he approached the head of the portal guard saluted and Trystan quickly saluted back, "How are things today Reimey?"

"Things are good sir, nothing unusual, some kids who were curious but most people are leery enough of this thing that they are keeping their distance. To be honest it is a little creepy having it swirl and crackle behind us..."

Trystan smiled and patted the man on the shoulder, "Nothing to worry about Reimey, I have known the magi who created this thing long enough to know that their use of magic is for the good, not evil. I assure you that nothing they have created will bring any of us harm."

Reimey turned and looked at the portal with a curious eye and then turned to look at Trystan who was looking at him reassuringly. Reimey nodded and smiled a half cocked grin, "If you say so sir."

Trystan patted the man on the shoulder again with his fist, the spaulders clanged at the impact, "Relief in two hours."

"Aye sir."

Trystan went and spoke to the other men around the portal as well. Originally there were four but the guard had been doubled to eight due to the initial curiosity of the object. Now that people were getting used to it however Trystan was gauging the guard, talking to them and getting their feelings towards taking some of them off to attend other duties around the Keep. After a few minutes he moved on, speaking to guards that he came across, asking them the typical questions about their duties. He was gauging morale, getting a feel for their posture in all this, and over all he felt that morale was pretty good.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 TeirzaBanner

Teirza spotted Trystan as he left the gate and made his way back into the city. She stood and Peeps hopped up onto her shoulder, then into the air and circled high before resting on one of the battlements. Teirza followed Trystan until he came to the town square and her little hollow eyes went wide as she stared at the portal. She traced every line of the ice sculpture lovingly with her eyes as she stared in awe. The swirling colors of light that pulsed and trickled from the ice and then met in the middle to form a sort of rainbow whirlpool were amazing to her and she was captivated.

A small smile crossed her face and she sat on a bench off to the side, no longer interested in Trystan she looked at the portal and was mezmorized by it's beauty.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Mythban2

The low toned chatter always grated on Myth's nerves whenever he was in these halls. However his usual annoyance was nothing compared to the utter contempt he had for those speaking of his wife in hushed tones. However it was to be expected as it was simply the way of the elven people to view everyone else as their inferiors. Truly it was actually the nobility who where the worst of the lot. Myth had noticed that the further from Silvanost he traveled the less his wife's lineage was an issue to the people. Myth let out a mental sigh as he introduced his other companions and awaited them to join him on the council floor.

Myth turned first to the Speaker bowing as he spoke. "Blessed Speaker...."

Myth shifted turning to address the rest of the room "and fellow members of the great council I have concluded my initial investigation into the events that occurred on the night of the high moon. I am reluctant to report that matters are worse than we could have initially thought and have sadly not improved any during my time at the source of the disturbance. However to give you better understanding I shall defer the explanation of the situation to those more familiar with the magical arts." Myth stepped back sweeping his arms towards the three woman before returning it to the folds of his robe and cloak.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A flash of golden light and Arvandor stood in the guise of an aged elven man. He was silent as he stared at the human knight with an appraising gaze. His sight seemed to be looking through her very being. His right hand lifted scratching at his chin lightly. He studied every aspect over that could be looked at physically. Her posture, her bearing, heartbeat, the way she breathed. All these details were looked at and mulled over.

Arvandor finally offered a slight bow before speaking in a gravely voice "I am sure Nol has prepared you to be questioned." His golden eyes shifted to Nol for a moment before looking back at Kellen.

"I do indeed have questions for you however they do not concern your appointment as a dragonrider. Normally Nol is correct in that I would follow up to ensure the High Born's decision is a solid one. However you were not chosen by the High Born but by Paladine himself. In this case I have no right to question the will of the gods. Humans and their unique nature always give me pause. However they have proven time and time again that they can handle the pressure of the world upon their back."

Arvandor took a step forward and leaned slightly towards Kellan "I wonder if you to will be able to bare the weight of the world upon your shoulders."

Standing tall once more a smile finally krept upon his face. "If you have questions for me you need but ask."

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Color_10Keatara was thrilled when true to Tanjee's word, they found Cherub's parents without any problems. But when Tanjee introduced her to Sir Gideon as a beautiful creature, she blushed a deep pink, instantly thinking about her scars and wondered what would possess Tanjee to introduce her as such. Then Sir Gideon smiled and any thoughts about Aeolis were quickly forgotten. His gentle brown eyes drew her in and she found herself smiling back.

"Aye....verra handsome", Keatara mumbled as she watched Gideon walk away. Her hand automatically went to the scar above and beneath her left eye, before lowering again. She turned to Tanjee, her green eyes a little sad as she cast one last glance back to Gideon's retreating back. "I be needin' tha' bed, Tanjee. Shall we go an find it?" She turned, but not before looking back again to see Gideon watching her and smiling. Keatara blushed again, smiling back as she quickly turned back around to face a smiling Tanjee. "What?", she asked her new friend.

Once to the northern stables, Tanjee made sure that she was made comfortable before leaving her and Tara sighed, looking at the comfortable bed. She saw her clothes that she wore here neatly folded and laying on a night stand next to the bed. The cubicles were made up of thin wooden partitions to allow for privacy and from what she'd seen, everything was very clean. She lay down onto the mattress, her head falling softly to the pillow, her long hair fanned out around her. She stared up at the ceiling, thinking about the day. She'd delivered her charges safe and sound to Heartlund, made a new friend and for a short while was infatuated. But now she knew it was simply due to Aeolis being the first one to give her aid and the fact that he was an elf. She knew about her own heritage and had been intrigued to meet her first male elf. He was very good looking, she couldn't deny that, but Sir Gideon...she sighed as she thought of him, smiling. She'd also made a new friend...Tanjee. At least, she felt as they'd be good friends. Tanjee almost instantly reminded her of the sister she'd never had and liked the Elfess immediately.

Her eyes closed as her exhaustion finally grabbed a hold of her and feel asleep with a smile on her face...something that hadn't happened in a long time.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 RayannRed

Rayann knew Myth didn’t care for the way she was treated by his own people but she never let him know it ever bothered her. In fact, she never made mention of it to him. There was no need. He was all too aware of it as it was,. There was no need in adding salt to an open wound. She would simply smile lovingly and give him a reassuring nod and a squeeze of his hand. And this time was no different. As she felt his ire rising at the whispers he heard, she looked up into his emerald gaze and smiled lovingly while letting her hand hold his just a slight bit tighter letting him know all would be well.

As he addressed the Speaker and the council gathered, she looked around at the faces before her. This wasn’t going to be an easy sell. Already she could see the look on their faces letting her know they had already made up their minds. The only thing that would sway these stubborn minds was proof. Hard proof.

When Myth turned the meeting over to her and the other two magi, Rayann glanced at Ceri and Pela then looked up at Myth. Once more she gave him a loving smile then nodded ever so slightly before she stepped forward. Her velvety, blood red robes swished softly as she moved and fell about her form like liquid. Bowing respectfully to the Speaker, she spoke. Her voice was gentle yet firm and as she spoke, her eyes made contact with each of the gathered members, including the Speakers.

”Blessed Speaker and fellow members of the great council, as my husband has stated, things have grown considerably worse since we first arrived in Heartlund. The three towers that have been erected have created a great rift in the magical force of Krynn. The rift is so great it affects all magical beings in some way or other. The use of ambient magic is so concentrated in this one spot, those of us who use arcane magic are greatly affected. Even those who have a natural affinity for arcane magic, such as Elves. And Nethermen.”

”It was during this time intelligence was gathered by a brave party who was sent to the ruins of North Keep. Ceridwyn & Aeolis accompanied a brave Lady Knight by the name of Kellan Longblade. They discovered a group of the Dark Queens forces sifting through the ruins in search of something. Before they could discover what it was they were looking for, they were discovered and before they could be ported back, the Lady Knight made the ultimate sacrifice to insure the others made it back to Heartlund to report what was discovered.”

“This trouble is compounded by the fact the two mages in control of these towers had created a protective force so great around these towers, the forces of Heartlund were decimated in a matter of just a few hours when they were attacked in a failed attempt to destroy the towers. It was shortly after the devastation of the battle that my daughter…..:

She looked at Myth for a moment then looked back at the Speaker and the members of the council after swallowing hard to regain control of her emotions.

”…Our daughter…..walked from Heartlund Keep and into the towers protective shield to take possession of the third and empty tower thus completing the triangle of the towers. One tower of Flame. One tower of Shadow. One tower of Shadow and Flame. A few days after her binding with the tower, she returned to Glen Durel and took all of the spell books my mother and father accumulated over the years.”

She paused for a moment to once more regain her composure as she looked down at the tips of her toes peering out of her robes. Taking a deep breath, she continued on as she raised her head to once more let her gaze settle on those gathered.

”It has also been learned there is a sizable army of He Dark Majesty marching towards Heartlund as we speak. Other Solamnic Knights have traveled to Heartlund to aid with reinforcement, but they are quite literally between a rock and a hard place. But all the reinforcements in the land of Krynn will be of no good for when the two opposing forces against the Knights meet up, there will be nothing left to fight for. Krynn itself will be destroyed. And all creatures great and small will be destroyed with it. Unless….”

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Pela

Before Rayann could say anything, another voice chimed in. When Rayann turned she would see Pela standing next to her and her ice blue eyes searching the faces of all those around the room.

”Unless all of us come together and fight for Krynn and not just ourselves.”

She glanced at Ceri, Myth then back to Rayann and saw they way they were looking at her but she remained on course as she spoke.

”I have seen first hand what these towers and those who control them are capable of. It is unlike anything I have ever seem before. While I know I do not have near the experience as these two mages, I have not led the life of a pampered child. I was raised by Bad Rock, a Netherman. He never tried to hide anything from me or shelter me from the truth of this harsh world. While it is true, he did some work for the Dark Queen, he did so only because her purse was heavy for our services. But when I saw the creature that raised me from an infant killed before my eyes, I realized just how much jeopardy this entire world is in. It is not my life that is danger of being destroyed, It is yours. And yours. And yours. It is all of your lives. For truly, when these mages decide to use the towers for what they created them for, there will be nothing any of us can do to stop them. It is for that reason I have given myself over to these two mages so they may teach me what they know and I can aid Krynn in what ever way I am able to do.”

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 KellanBanner

Kellan felt as though the golden eyes of Arvandor were looking straight through her yet it was not a look she felt uncomfortable with. She knew he had to make his own assessment of her and first impressions were everything as far as she was concerned. She hoped that somehow what she portrayed outwardly was somehow a reflection of her inner self in his eyes. When he finally spoke o her, she heard the wisdom in his words. When he leaned in slightly and looked at her even closer and thought aloud, she quirked a delicate brow over her left eye. As he finally opened the dialogue between them, she glanced at Nol and Raju then back at Arvandor and saw that smile. She couldn‘t help but smile in return knowing that while this was as much of an interrogation of her, he was allowing her that same courtesy. Her voice was soft but held that slight tone of authority to it as she spoke matter of factly to the wise dragon.

”I had better be able to bare the weight. If not then everything I have been working towards is all for naught. And in case you haven’t realized it yet, I don’t give up that easily.”

She took a deep breath then let it out slowly as she sized up the Gold in his Elven form. He was quite imposing even in this form and she knew there was a reason why. Her light brown eyes narrowed slightly as she studied him. Finally her questions were ready and she began to ask them. One by one.

”I don’t believe in procrastinating so I would like to get started first thing in the morning. Are you ready to train a new rider? Time is of the essence and I need to learn all you can teach me. Do you have a particular method you want to start with? What sort of time frame do you see us leaving the Myst Isle? And since I don’t like treading on hallowed ground when uninvited, please let me know when I am about to put my foot in my mouth. Do we have an agreement?”

Kellan let her gaze settle on his golden eyes as she slowly lifted her hand for him to clasp if he wished. She didn’t want to seem pushy but she didn’t want to wait any longer. She’d been living the life of luxury, so to speak, since she got to this sacred isle. Bt now, she was ready,. Ready to take on this task, And while it was monumental in the least, she needed something tactical to occupy her mind so she could put what she’d been studying the past few moths into perspective.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Ceribanner

An elder Silvanesti Elf stood as Pela finished. He stared at her with long bushy eyebrows and then scanned over Rayann and the Prince. He then looked over them at Ceridwyn who had remained quiet and in the background. He spoke to her, “Ceridwyn Bol Shoraes, long have you strove to bring the problems of this world into our backyard and long have we chosen to remain safe instead. It seems that you have finally managed to crack the surface and get a meeting with the high council through the avenue of the Prince.”

He turned and looked at the rest of the Council of Elders, it was obvious that many were uncomfortable with this elders stance, their faces for the most part showing that he was not necessarily correct in his statements. He turned and looked back at Ceridwyn as he slowly descended the stairs, “Now you bring this young human child into it, a mere teenager, a young teenager at that to testify on behalf of all the humans on Krynn as to how dire the circumstances truly are. Surly we are not to be swayed by the testimony of a young girl who was raised by a Netherman are we?”

Ceridwyn saw Pela bristle at this and reached just as the young girl began to step forward towards the Elder, her voice instantly entered the young girls mind, ~“Quiet your soul dear child, this is Gintus, he is the only reason the Elves have not yet entered into the fight to save Krynn. His words are carefully chosen to elicit emotional responses and make his case, remaining calm is the best defense.”~

The Elder Elves brows perked as Pela moved and then lowered again as he turned to look at Ceridwyn. He knew her mind though he could not hear her words, she was communicating with the human girl. He stepped off the last step and onto the floor as he looked around the hall, “To the gathered. Long have the Silvanesti Elves remained safe and at peace. This war that rages is not our war, it is not our doing. We are a peaceful race, untouched by the corruption of this worlds sins and turning their backs on the true gods of Krynn. To put ourselves into deaths path, to watch as our children and our lineages are murdered for a cause outside our doing is catamount to insanity. The testimony of a human who the Prince chose to marry? A woman who can’t even control her own daughter? A daughter who willingly walked into the path of darkness and now fights against them? HUMAN issues! Even the Dwarves are smart enough to remain silent.”

He turned and looked at Rayann and then to Ceridwyn, “It pains me to think what Nim’Sul would say to see you now Ceridwyn. You have chosen to deny your heritage and your people all for the sake of a love that would have withered anyway. We are not in the business of mixing blood, or spilling it.”

Gintus looked at Ceridwyn who had calmly stepped up beside Pela, and was now walking in front of her. She stepped passed the elder Elf and up onto the stairs. She walked all the way to the top and onto the main platform, a place that was reserved only for the Council and by doing so she was in direct violation of Elven law. Some of the assembled murmured at this and Gintus was about to speak when Ceridwyn’s voice cut him off, “Silence Gintus, you say another word and so help me I will abuse my magic.” The Elder actually stepped back from her slightly as she said these words, Rayann had seen the look in her eyes before, this was the Ceridwyn that came out when needed, the one that fought back when the time was right. “What heritage exactly are you speaking of when you say I turned my back Gintus? The heritage of weavers who were and are still treated like third class citizens of a pompous elite such as yourself? If that is what I am turning my back on than gods help me do it. My family was nothing to you or anyone in this chamber until I rose above, and even then it took the word of Nim’Sul to do it. Still my Father and Mother labor in their workshop, their humble life a testimony to their calling. Social status is not a creation of the gods, it is a figment of the imagination of Elves such as yourself who have decided that because for whatever selfish reason you are better than others. I have been on both sides, I have scraped the food of the forest and tasted the elegance of the banquet hall, I have worn the rags of a poor child and felt the touch of fine purple silks and if I had to chose right now, I would take humility and compassion over selfish comforts.”

Gintus glared at her. The Council shuffled uncomfortably and the slightest smile could be seen on the face of the Speaker as he looked at Ceridwyn and then glanced over to his son proudly. Gintus, the eldest of the Council had for hundreds of years kept the whole of the Silvanesti hostage to his desires, even the Speaker couldn’t over rule the council and Gintus had managed to sway enough of them to his bidding. But now the grip was beginning to slip. He took a step towards Ceridwyn and she glared at him as she continued, “As for referring to the Silvanesti as a peaceful race all one would have to do is remember the Kinslayer wars, in case you have forgotten all the Elves once stood under the same banner, now we are nothing more than scattered remnants of what we once were.”

Gintus continued to stare at her but remained silent. Ceridwyn turned and looked at the Council. She remained on the main platform but she dropped to her knees and looked directly at the Speaker, “My lord, the testimony of your son and daughter in law are true and to the exact facts. The three towers, despite who operates them, pose a direct threat to life on Krynn, ALL life in Krynn is in jeopardy of this new magic. What the motivation is behind these towers remains a mystery to all of us, but what I can tell you is that through death they thrive. Your grand daughter does operate one of them, that is a fact, but this is not a reflection in any way on you or her parents, Kali is an adult, her path is that of her own choices, why she decided to do what she did is as much a mystery as the towers themselves. Kali smashed the gate of Silvanost by herself BEFORE she became part of the power of the towers, we side stepped genocide that day because compassion was raised in her heart. I cling to that every day. However she is sided with Fifth and Piramay now and therefore our enemy and the fact is the strength behind the towers grows daily, if we don’t act soon we will continue to fall behind. I leave it to your wisdom to make a decision and to preserve what we have left.”

She stood and bowed her head low to the Speaker and stepped off the platform. When her foot hit the first step from the top she stopped and turned to look at him again, “I will tell you however that should the Council once again vote to remain silent and passive I will be asking for volunteers, the will of the Elven individuals will then make the choice.”

“Do you see? Insolence and rebellion, the traits we have always dealt with concerning Ceridwyn! From the day Nim’Sul brought her into this chamber to…”

Gintus suddenly went silent and clutched at his lips. Ceridwyn’s hand slipped back into her robe sleeve and she slowly walked towards him. Her soft, chestnut brown eyes scanned his and she stopped at the last step looking directly into his eyes. She whispered almost lovingly, “I warned you Gintus to not speak or I would respond. You asked what Nim’Sul would think of me if he could see me now, well let me tell you. Nim’Sul hated the politics of this chamber, he believed that we as a race had underestimated and written off humans and most of all he believed in a bratty Elf girl who had an affinity for the arcane. What would Nim’Sul think of me? I think he would be proud of the fact that I told the truth and finally silenced your venom.”

She brushed past him and as she made her way back to Pela and Rayann’s sides she looked at Pela. Her face was hidden under her hood and only those whom she directly face would see her eyes. She winked ever so slightly at Pela and flashed her mischievous smile as she fell back into ranks.”

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 NolBanner

Nol remained silent and let Kellan speak to Arvandor. It was his place in this moment to give her the most amount of room possible. Arvandor had accepted her, and he had offered his wisdom and council. Only one mortal that Nol could think of had ever been given that liberty with him and the very fact her had offered it spoke more to the situation than ever Kellan would understand, at least for now. He knew she would figure it out in time and see the significance of it all. He turned and looked at the great gold dragon, waiting to hear how he would respond to Kellan’s enthusiasm.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Pela

Pela was ready to hurl a spell at the arrogant Elf and freeze him where he stood….but only enough for him to feel the painful burn of the cold as it slowly froze his body. How DARE he refer to her as something less than what she was! She would rather have been raised by Bad Rock than any of these pampas fools. At least with him she gained a greater understanding of this world than they could have ever given her. Had it not been for Ceridwyn’s gentle but firm touch and soft voice in her head, Pela would have done exactly what she wanted to do….and much more. Thankfully, the Elfess kept her from lashing out, as was usually her way, and prevented a situation that Myth would have most likely have to kill her to protect the others.

As she listened to Ceridwyn speak to the council, Pela felt a sense of justice knowing the Elfess was saying things others didn’t necessarily want to hear but it had to be said. The more Ceridwyn spoke, the prouder Pela felt to know her and it showed in the way Pela stood. Her aggressive stance slowly changed. Her arms were no longer slightly bent and her shoulders no longer slightly hunched with her left foot a step ahead of her right. Instead, she now stood straight with her shoulders back and her head held high. She was beginning to see there were other ways to fight than hurling spells and exchanging physical blows. There was the wounding of one’s pride and from the reaction she could see, that was one of the deepest wounds one could inflict.

As the elder Elf tried to speak once more and ended up clutching at his lips, Pela blinked and looked at Ceri. She felt the pull of magic and knew a spell had been cast and why that surprised her, she didn’t know. But she was grateful when the man was no longer able to speak his poisonous words. As Ceri returned to the stand with her and Rayann, Pela barely caught sight of that wink and grin but she saw enough of it and it brought her a sense of satisfaction.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 RayannRed

As Gintus began to speak down about Rayann and Kali, Rayann felt her anger rising quickly. She could care less what the council thought of her, but her children were another story entirely. Even though one of them had done something so grave, it broke her parents hearts. She glanced at Myth and saw the way his back straightened and the look in his eyes changed and she knew if this Gintus kept up, there would be nothing they could do to stop Myth.

Finally Ceri made her move and as Rayann listened to her talk, she glanced around at the others gathered. Her words were making an impact on the others and for the first time, Rayann felt as though this may be a fight they could possibly win. As Ceri descended the steps once more, she watched her friend cast a spell that silenced Gintus. Rayann wanted to cheer but she remained steadfast and the expression on her face never changed.

As Ceri returned to stand with her and Pela, Rayann reached out and clasped her friends hand, letting her eyes settle on Ceri’s, nodding slightly. They had spoken all they could about the mater. Now came the most difficult part. Waiting to see what the Council’s final decision would be.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Mythban2

Myth allowed his wife and Pella to say their peace and remained silent as they spoke their peace to the council. Just as many people in the assembledge would listen to their words as those who would dismiss them. Some voices were guarantied to surface to speak out against them by virtue of their lineage alone, and almost on queue the voice of Gintus rose over the others speaking his elegant words of opposition.

They were words Myth had heard in his youth and in many assemblies since his return. Myth did his best to ignore the verbal jabs aimed at his wife and Pela. Human or not she was still his wife and deserving of respect regardless of her heritage or blood. His face remained impassive but it was hard to hide the fact he was tensing up. Gintus was the main opposition to any attempts to reach out to the world as a whole. Myth always believed him to be a snake in an elvish skin.

As Ceridwyn stepped out and past ontp the platform to speak Myth resisted the urge to smirk. Instead he shot a hard look to a couple of guards who looked as if they were about to step from their posts to remove the elven mage. When they saw Myth looking at them they stopped and stayed at their posts. His attentino returned to his elven friend as she told the council everything they knew but never wanted to say aloud. She shined the light of truth upon the council chamber. Gintus was surprisingly quiet, but once Ceri was clearly done he began to open his mouth and spread his pretty venom once more only to be silenced as he should have been decades ago.

Ceridwyn returned to her place and Myth stepped forward once more. "We can no longer afford to remain here in the forests of Silvanost hiding from the evils that plague the lands of Krynn. What happens to the world outside our borders will have an impact upon us. I know the mages Fifth and Piramay, I have worked by their sides and I can not even put to words just how vile these beings can be. Their intentions I assure you are most foul and if we ignore them long enough they will come knocking upon our door and we will be unable to stop them."

Myth took a deep breath "I have seen decades of needless warfare and despite what some may think I do not relish the idea of marching soldiers into conflict. However with each passing day the options become more limited. The foes we face will not listen to passive diplomacy. If we do not do our part now and help stop the mages of the towers then your children and precious bloodlines will be meaningless as the world is consumed by shadow and fire."

Myth turned and met Gintus' eyes and spoke in a flat serious tone. "Vote for what you know is right for Krynn, not for your yourself..."

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 SpeakerOfTheStars

The Speaker stood as Myth'alas finished and looked across the chamber. His eyes passed over Gintus at first as he merely took in his kin and then finally came back to settle on the Elf who had kept the Silvanesti in the forests for so long.

He broke his gaze and stared at Prince Myth'alas for a moment then. It was the most sentimental look that Rayann had ever seen from him, and though it lasted only a moment, the Elf that rarely showed his emotions was tell his son non-verbally how proud he was of him. He then turned his gaze to Rayann and gave the slightest of nods and then did the same to Pela and finally to Ceridwyn. He turned back to the chamber and it seemed as if everyone was holding their breath.

His old body did not match the booming voice of authority that then escaped his lips, "I call the Council to vote, does the nation of Silvanesti join the battle to save the entirety of Krynn?"

It was customary for the Speaker to always vote last, his was the vote of leadership that would break the tie if there was one as the Council was an odd number. His voice was also the last heard meaning that the final authority had spoken on the issue. Most importantly however it would disallow any influence by the voting members to side with him since he was the formal leader of the Elven nation. Before he turned to the Council for their votes however he spoke again, "AYE!"

With that he turned and looked at the Council, all ten that were still in their seats responded one at a time with the same answer, 'aye.'

The Speaker then turned to look at Gintus who had never ascended the stairs and was still on the main floor of the chamber. With a look that was almost sympathetic the Speaker spoke, "Since you are at a loss for tongue I will assume your vote is the same as it usually is, however it matters little at this point."

He looked out across the council chamber and spoke, "The Silvanesti join with the races of humanity, we fight for Krynn."

The chamber erupted in applause and noise as the Elves began to speak to one another. The silver horns above rang out indicating that the meeting was adjourned and the Speaker leaned to one of his aids who was already at his side. The Young noble Elf nodded and descended the stairs to Prince Myth'alas, "My Prince, the Speaker of the Stars requests dinner with you, your wife, Ceridwyn and guest in one hour before you depart again for Heartlund. Do you respond in the positive?"

Myth nodded his head and the aid bowed low, "Very well your highness, I shall let him know."

He stood to his height and glanced at Pela, there was the slightest sparkle in his eyes and he turned to ascend the staircase and slipped behind the main wall behind the platform.

Ceridwyn looked at Gintus, the old Elf was showing severe signs of defeat as he watched the Elves leave. He turned and looked at the Prince. There was no malice in his eyes, only sadness. He whispered to the Prince in missive before turning and walking up the stairs, ~ "All I have ever done your highness was to protect our people. I pray you are not leading us like lambs to slaughter. Too many times the weakness of men has caused the blood of Elves to be spilled... I only sought to protect us, despite what you think of me." ~

Ceridwyn knew he had spoke via missive, she could feel the magic in the air but she dared not to listen in knowing he was addressing the Prince. She turned and looked at Myth as Gintus left, her eyes staring up into his own, "My Lord, we have lept the first hurdle, and now the harder work begins."

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Pela

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 RayannRed

Pela watched as the Elf approached and asked Myth if he and his company would join the Speaker for dinner. The few moments he stood near the Prince her eyes never left him. When he looked to her just before he turned and walked back to the stairs, Pela felt a slight fluttering in her stomach and her cheeks felt warm. When she looked at Ceri and Rayann she saw them both looking at her with knowing smiles. Trying to play it off as though nothing happened, she cleared her throat and changed the subject before any words were even spoken about anything.

”Dinner sounds absolutely wonderful after this excursion.”

Rayann laughed softly and nodded in agreement.

”Indeed it does, Pela. I believe I’ve had enough politics for one day. I am ready to see my son and spend some precious time with him before we return to Heartlund.”

She looked up at Myth as she looped her arm under his elbow and smiled.

”I can’t wait to see how big he’s grown. Even in this short time.”

As Myth escorted her out followed by Pela and Ceri, Rayann’s heart began to beat a little faster as the anticipation of seeing her son became almost overwhelming. She left word with Myth’s mother she wished to see her son as soon as the meeting was adjourned and she wasn’t disappointed. The twin guards that had been assigned to look after her son stood just outside the doors with a wiggling Shaer in one of their arms.

As soon as the child saw his mother and farther he squealed with sheer happiness and tried in vein to get out of the hands of the one holding him. Rayann closed the distance quickly and scooped Shaer up in her arms. Holding him close in a loving hug, she felt tears brim her eyes and threaten to spill down her cheeks. She’d missed her son dearly and now that he was back in her arms again, she wasn’t sure she could let him go again.

She turned then to Myth and Shaer lunged for his father’s arms rather the Prince was ready or not. Of course Myth had no trouble gathering Shaer up and lift him high into the air before bringing him back to rest against his broad chest. Shaer squealed in delight once more then proceeded to babble on about something neither mother nor father could understand but enjoyed all the same. Rayann looked to the twin guards and smiled, nodding.

”Thank you for taking such good care of our son.”

The elder of the twins, which Rayann could never tell them apart, nodded and let a slight smile ease over his features.

”It was our honor, M’Lady. He is a joy to be around. But it was the Speakers wife who had the most fun with him. We just made sure he did not get too far away without her knowing where he was. You and the Prince are very lucky to have such a wonderful son.”

Rayann nodded again as Shaer leaned from Myth with his arms outstretched towards his mother. Once more taking her son in her arms, she drew him in for a tight hug that he promptly protested over but squealed happily all the same.

Pela watched the exchange between mother and son and she felt a pang of longing for something she never had but felt as though she missed out on something very precious. Still, she loved Bad Rock for taking her in the way he did and raising her. He could have easily eaten her and saved himself a lot of trouble but instead, he found it in his unemotional heart to raise her the best way he knew how. And she was very happy for that.

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Ceribanner

Ceridwyn watched as the young elf noble approached and made his invitation. By Myth's nod she knew she would be attending and it didn't bother her in the least. Spending a night in Silvanost was going to be a delight for as much as she fought the politics and stubbornness of her kin she did love her home. As the young elf looked at Pela and then left she almost gasped and smiled as Pela turned to look at her. Her familiar mischievous smirk crossed her face and she shook her head gently as the four walked out of the room.

Father and Mother were reunited with son and Ceridwyn whispered to Myth as Rayann scooped up their child, "I take my leave of you my Prince, I need to have some quiet time before dinner this evening."

Myth looked at her knowingly and nodded. She smiled and spoke softly, "My thanks, I will see you at sunset. Please tell Rayann I fare her well until this evening."

She smiled and nodded to Pela with a wink, "You did well today Pela, that wasn't an easy situation, for any of us."

She reached out and touched the back of Pela's hand gently and then turned, disappearing into the city.

She made her way to her home and shed the formal robes almost immediately, choosing white pants and a loose white shirt. She went to a door off her bedroom and opened it. The dark blue glow from within bathed her face and she inhaled sadly. She stepped into the room and knelt down on a blue and white pillow and face a drawing of a human man with a groomed beard and noble expression. Tears quickly formed in her eyes and she inhaled deeply starring into the face of her former fiance. "It is time my first beloved...,"

She reached into her shirt and withdrew a pendant that was hanging from a silver necklace. She reached forward and placed it on a stump that had been carved to hold the jewelry. She spoke softly and touched the portrait. "I will never forget you, but it is time for the past to be the past."

She stood and began to chant the ancient words of magic, sprinkling a reagent that had been set in the room. The whole area was bathed in golden light and every object in the room had a thin golden outline. Slowly the items began to disappear. The remnants of her sadness and past drifted into golden smoke. She looked at the now empty space and a smile crossed her face. She whispered softly to herself, "My sweet and noble Aeolis... now I can truly be yours and yours alone."

Ch 19: Fortress Heartlund - Page 3 Color_10Morning came and Keatara woke with it, her sleep having been interrupted only a few times by her usual nightmares of the day she'd lost her family. She was still well rested though and eager to start the new day. Upon rising, she gathered her neatly folded clothing and smiling to the other women were also rising she headed for the bathhouse. If there was one thing she enjoyed and missed, it was her daily bath. Her mother had been adamant on having fun....getting dirty.....but make sure that you are clean whenever possible.

Finishing her bath, her hair once again clean and shining, smelling of jasmine she dressed and headed for the mess hall where she made short work of her breakfast. She noticed Gideon sitting at a far table with his comrades and quickly turned back to her breakfast, blushing. She didn't have much experience with men or what to do when one liked one. Her brothers and father had been over protective of her and then traveling with old Madge...well, she'd not had much chance to get to know many men on a romantic level.

Finishing her food, she quickly left the mess hall and headed out to explore and find a clothing store where she could purchase more comfortable clothing other than her traveling/battle garb. What she'd worn yesterday after her bath had been wonderful and soft and she looked forward to wearing more of it.

Arvandor simply looked at Kellan silently for several seconds before he nodded his head. "young, confident, strong willed, and opinionated.... you share many similarities with someone else I know.: His eyes lifted up as he looked at Nol with a smirk that faded as quickly as it appeared.

"You are welcome to begin your training as soon as your companion is willing, but I warn you it won't be as gentle as the training your fellow riders will receive. We have little time to spend going over the nuances and finer points of being a rider and as such you are going to receive more... active training." Nol would know this meant her training would be comprised of active battle and instruction on the fly.

" As a knight I know you are a trained horse rider. I would wager you will transition into a dragonrider with minimal pain, but only time will tell."

Arvandor took a moment to look around before looking at Nol and then Kellan. "I think that concludes the business portion of our meeting." Arvandor clasped his hands behind his back and looked towards the entrance to the tower. "Might we step inside and partake of a drink? I do have a more personal inquiry to discuss with you."
